What is Linzess, and how does it work?

Linzess treats chronic constipation, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and abdominal pain symptoms. It increases the fluid in your intestines, which helps accelerate food movement through the gut. It can also improve stool texture and lessen gastrointestinal reactions, such as bloating.

  • Gentle constipation relief: Linzess softens stool, easing chronic constipation discomfort.

  • Starts working quickly: Linzess has a relatively fast onset, with some individuals experiencing relief from constipation within a few days.

  • Ease abdominal discomfort: Linzess relieves abdominal pain and other uncomfortable GI symptoms.

Linzess side effects

Common side effects of Linzess include:

Diarrhea
Bloating
Gas

Other side effects, which are less common but might be more severe, could include:

Dizziness or light-headedness
Allergic reactions
Upper respiratory tract infection medication
You should schedule an appointment with our board-certified virtual doctors if you notice any adverse effects or develop other new or concerning symptoms.

Severe diarrhea can increase your risk of serious dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, and other potentially serious consequences. If severe diarrhea occurs or you experience an unusual or allergic reaction to Linzess, contact your healthcare provider or visit the nearest hospital emergency room.

How to take Linzess

Your pharmacist will provide you with instructions on how to take Linzess. The typical starting dose for adults with IBS is 290 mcg orally, once daily. Adults with chronic idiopathic constipation (CIC) may start with an initial dose of 145 mcg orally, once daily.

Linzess should be taken by mouth as directed by your doctor, typically once daily on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes before your first meal. If you cannot swallow Linzess capsules whole, you can open the capsule and mix the contents with a teaspoon of applesauce or mix the contents into water.

If you miss a dose of Linzess, skip the missed dose and take the next dose at your regular dosing schedule.

What to avoid while taking Linzess

Linzess has 59 drug interactions. Don’t change what you take without checking with your doctor or pharmacist. That includes other prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, and other drugs.

Linzess is not known to interact with alcohol. However, taking Linzess with food may increase GI side effects such as stomach pain, diarrhea, and gas.
