Doses of Wegovy® that are in shortage will be available as compounded semaglutide only until the shortage has ended.

Over a 68-week clinical trial, patients treated with Wegovy® lost an average of 15% body weight.¹ In the study, that meant an average weight loss of 33 pounds. Wegovy® helps patients lose weight by increasing the activity of a hormone that we all have called GLP-1. Normally, this hormone shows up after we eat to help the body do a better job of taking sugar out of the blood, reducing cravings, slowing digestion, and helping us feel full. Wegovy® increases GLP-1, helping you feel all of that with smaller amounts of food than you would normally. Although Wegovy® is the same chemical as Ozempic®, semaglutide, the main differences between Wegovy® and Ozempic® are their intended consumer and the slight differences in dosing. Wegovy® was created for and can be used by anyone who is overweight and has health concerns, while Ozempic® is FDA-approved only for patients with type 2 diabetes.

That being said, they have a lot in common. Novo Nordisk manufactures them both with the same active ingredient, semaglutide. However, the amount of semaglutide differs, with Wegovy’s final amount of semaglutide being 2.4 mg and Ozempic® having four dosing options: 0.25 mg, 0.5 mg, 1 mg, and 2 mg.
