Wegovy® is a medication for chronic weight management used with diet and exercise. When used in conjunction with lifestyle changes, this weight loss drug can be effective in helping patients lose excess weight. It comes as a pen-injector in a range of doses starting at 0.25 mg and topping out at 2.4 mg.

Wegovy® uses

Wegovy® is FDA-approved for weight loss in obese patients, or overweight patients who also have another weight-related condition such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or others.

  • Weight loss

Obesity is a chronic health issue that requires long-term management and is associated with severe health complications, including heart disease, diabetes, sleep apnea, asthma, hormonal concerns for women such as PCOS, arthritis, and certain types of cancer. Losing five to ten percent of body weight can bring impactful health benefits, such as:

    • Reduced risk of heart disease

    • Improved energy

    • Improved blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol levels

On June 4, 2021, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Wegovy® for adults who suffer from obesity or are overweight. This is the first drug for chronic weight management that has been approved since 2014.

Combined with a reduced-calorie meal plan and increased physical activity, Wegovy® can be highly effective in helping patients lose weight.

Dedicated to providing individualized solutions, we recognize Wegovy®  as an outstanding choice; however, we aim to highlight alternatives for patients seeking the most suitable treatment for weight management. Our physicians may recommend or prescribe other GLP-1 options depending on availability and individual preferences. Explore these choices:

    • Semaglutide: Due to shortages, compounded semaglutide may be prescribed as an alternative to branded Wegovy® as long as it remains on the FDA drug shortages list. Although compounded semaglutide is not FDA-approved, our pharmacy provider complies with pertinent federal and state laws and FDA regulations.*

    • Zepbound® (tirzepatide): A breakthrough in weight management, this dual-action GLP-1 and GIP receptor agonist not only aids in regulating blood sugar levels, but also presents a promising avenue for effective weight loss.

Other medications our doctors may prescribe for weight loss include:

*As of 1/4/2024, availability for compounded semaglutide is currently limited to residents in the following states: AZ, CA, CO, DC, DE, FL, GA, HI, IA, ID, IL, KS, MA, MD, ME, MO, MT, ND, NE, NH, NM, NV, NY, OH, OK, OR, PA, RI, TN, TX, UT, WA, WY. Although compounded semaglutide is not FDA-approved, our pharmacy provider complies with all federal and state laws and FDA regulations. Doses of Wegovy® that are in shortage will be available as compounded semaglutide only until the shortage has ended.

  • Risk reduction of cardiovascular events

Now, Wegovy® isn't just for weight loss; it also can protect against life-threatening cardiovascular events. Recently approved by the FDA in March 2024, Wegovy® is the first weight loss medication to offer this dual benefit.  Heart disease, heart attacks, and strokes are all-too-common risks associated with obesity and being overweight. This FDA-approved medication not only helps you shed excess weight but also can significantly reduce your risk of these potentially deadly cardiovascular events.(4) In a rigorous trial involving over 17,600 participants, Wegovy® significantly reduced the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events, including cardiovascular death, heart attack, and stroke.(4)  Other medications prescribed to lower the risk of life-threatening cardiovascular events include:

Wegovy® side effects

Like all drugs, Wegovy® has some side effects. The most common side effects of patients who took Wegovy® were:

How to take Wegovy®

Wegovy® is available as a single-dose, pre-filled pen that you inject into your skin. Once a week, on the same day, you inject yourself with the Wegovy® pen. You can do it at any time, as long as it is the same day each week. You can inject Wegovy® with or without meals.

Wegovy® for weight loss is designed to increase dosage over time to minimize side effects gradually. It is recommended to stay at each Wegovy® dose for at least four weeks. Your doctor will walk you through this process and be there for you each step of the way. It is essential to contact your doctor if you increase your dosage to ensure no adverse side effects.

Multiple pens contain different amounts: 0.25 mg, 0.5 mg, 1 mg, 1.7 mg, or 2.4 mg of semaglutide. The standard dosing schedule is:

  • Month 1: 0.25 mg once a week

  • Month 2: 0.5 mg once a week

  • Month 3: 1 mg once a week

  • Month 4: 1.7 mg once a week

  • Month 5 and beyond: 2.4 mg once a week

After you increase to 2.4 mg, you have completed the escalation process and will continue to use the 2.4 mg semaglutide for as long as you take the drug.

It is also essential to know that a dose increase may not be necessary for some patients as some individuals can have a good weight loss response to even low doses of medication.

What to avoid while taking Wegovy®

  • Although Wegovy® for weight loss has been proven safe and effective and was approved by the FDA, there are still unknown things, such as drug interactions. There have not yet been clinical trials testing Wegovy® in combination with:

    • Insulin

    • Prescription drugs

    • Over-the-counter drugs

    • Other products intended for weight loss

    • Herbal weight loss products or other supplements

With Wegovy®, there may be an increased risk for low blood sugar, especially when combined with the above.

Because drug and insulin interactions with Wegovy® have not yet been studied, talking to your weight loss doctor is vital. You must disclose any personal or family history of medical conditions and all the medicines you take, including any over-the-counter medications, such as daily vitamins or herbal supplements, as they could affect the efficacy or safety of Wegovy®.

  • How much weight can you lose with Wegovy®?

Over a 68-week clinical trial, patients treated with Wegovy® lost an average of 15% body weight.1 In the study, that meant an average weight loss of 33 pounds. The weight loss medication is most effective when combined with a reduced-calorie meal diet and increased physical activity.

  • How long do you take Wegovy® for weight loss?

  • How does Wegovy® help you lose weight?

Wegovy® helps patients lose weight by increasing the activity of a hormone that we all have called GLP-1. Normally, this hormone shows up after we eat to help the body do a better job of taking sugar out of the blood, reducing cravings, slowing digestion, and helping us feel full. Wegovy® increases GLP-1, helping you feel all of that with smaller amounts of food than you would normally. In this way, Wegovy® can help you lose weight by helping you stick to a reduced-calorie diet, resulting in weight loss over the long term.

  • What is the difference between Ozempic® and Wegovy®?

Although Wegovy® is the same chemical as Ozempic®, semaglutide, the main differences between Wegovy® and Ozempic® are their intended consumer and the slight differences in dosing. Wegovy® was created for and can be used by anyone who is overweight and has health concerns, while Ozempic® is FDA-approved only for patients with type 2 diabetes.

That being said, they have a lot in common. Novo Nordisk manufactures them both with the same active ingredient, semaglutide. However, the amount of semaglutide differs, with Wegovy’s final amount of semaglutide being 2.4 mg and Ozempic® having four dosing options: 0.25 mg, 0.5 mg, 1 mg, and 2 mg.
