What is family health and fitness day? 

Celebrated on the 2nd Saturday of June each year, this significant day celebrates the involvement of physical activity held by the National Recreation and Park Association.

NRPA promotes the importance of keeping families and communities healthy by sharing ways to get active whether you are inside or outside your home. This year on June 13th, while socially distancing, we encourage you and your family to get your heart rate up and enjoy the movement!

Keeping your family from developing a sedentary lifestyle can be incredibly valuable. It is no surprise that families who regularly exercise tend to have more positive outlook on life, and live a healthier lifestyle. 

How can You Keep Your Family Healthy?

Reaching health goals as a family can become an enjoyable activity. So, let us reflect on ways you can keep your family healthy by getting your heart rate up:

Hiking

Hiking is a great way to introduce your family to nature. Whether you are in the city or the suburbs, there are usually plenty of great nearby hiking options. 

Walking

Taking a walk is an underrated exercise. Walking raises your heart rate to a moderate level which is just as beneficial to your health. Stepping outside and walking down the street – or through the park – is enough to start transforming your health. 

Dance nights

For those who want to stay active inside, dancing is a great method for also improving agility and muscular strength. You may not even realize you’re exercising due to how much fun you’re having!

Biking, throwing around a frisbee, or playing with your dogs are a few more ways you can get your heart rate up.

Families can hold each other accountable. While breaking a sweat can become a friendly competition, it encourages your family to pick up the pace as you support and grow with each other. Developing these new exercises will help you maintain healthy habits throughout your lifetime.
