About Trandate (labetalol)
Trandate is considered a beta blocker. As with other beta blockers, labetalol works by slowing the heart rate and relaxing blood vessels. By lowering blood pressure and improving blood flow, Trandate helps lower your risk of heart attacks and stroke.
Some conditions that Trandate is known to treat include high blood pressure (hypertension). Trandate is available only by prescription. It is available in a generic formulation as well as under different brand names, including Normodyne.
Trandate may be prescribed as an oral tablet, or intravenous (IV) solution, which can only be administered in a hospital setting. It’s always important to follow the specific instructions on your prescription, as they can vary based on the formulation and dosage that you are prescribed.
If you're prescribed Trandate, be sure to complete the full course of the beta blocker unless your doctor specifically tells you to stop. If you don’t complete your prescription, the beta blocker may not fully treat your high blood pressure.
