About Omnicef (cefdinir)
Cefdinir is considered a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic, which functions by killing bacteria. The mechanism of action involves inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins. In other words, cefidinir stops bacteria from growing.
Like any antibiotic, this medication can only be used for bacterial infections. It is ineffective against colds, flu, and other viral infections because it will not destroy viruses, only bacteria. It is important to remember that use of antibiotics for viral infections will not help you heal faster, and will only lead to possible side effects and antibiotic resistance.
Some conditions that cefdinir is known to treat include bacterial infections such as bacterial sinus infections, pneumonia, and others. Cefdinir is available only by prescription. It is available in a generic formulation under different brand names, including Omnicef Omni-Pac.

The side effects associated with taking cefdinir are typically mild. Most cefdinir side effects are associated with nausea and vomiting.

Rash (including diaper rash in children)
Headache
Indigestion

How to take cefdinir

Cefdinir can come in different forms and doses, so be sure to follow the specific instructions on your prescription. It is typically prescribed twice a day, i.e. every 12 hours. Some specific instructions may include taking 300 mg capsule every 12 hours or 600mg once a day, for adolescents and adults.
For infants taking liquid Cefdinir and children six months up to 12 years of age, the dosage is based on body weight. It is usually 7mg per kg of body weight every 12 hours or 14mg per kg of body weight per day. The dosage is not higher than 600mg a day.
Cefdinir is usually taken for 5 to 10 days.
What to avoid while taking cefdinir
Cefdinir has many possible drug interactions. Omnicef may interact with aluminum- or magnesium-containing antacids, probenecid, and iron supplements and foods fortified with iron. Cefdinir may cause false positive results with some diabetic urine testing products.
Additionally, cefdinir could affect the results of some lab tests, including a false-positive reaction for ketones in urine with tests using nitroprusside.
Don’t change what you are taking without checking with your doctor or pharmacist. That includes other medications or supplements, as well as over-the-counter drugs.
