What is Yaz and What Does it Treat?

Yaz is an oral tablet primarily used for birth control. It is also one of three oral contraceptives that are approved by the FDA to treat acne for menstruating women (men should not take Yaz for acne). Yaz also helps treat symptoms of premenstrual syndrome, polycystic ovarian syndrome, and hirsutism (abundant facial and body hair).

Yaz is made up of two synthetic hormones, drospirenone (synthetic progestogen) and a small amount of ethinyl estradiol (synthetic estrogen). It is common for drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol to be combined with other hormones.

Yaz does not protect against sexually transmitted diseases or infections. Use PlushCare for safe and easy STD testing.

How Does Yaz Work?

The two synthetic hormones in Yaz work together to prevent ovulation. If an ovary does not release an egg, then you cannot get pregnant. The hormones in Yaz also cause cervical mucus to thicken, making it more difficult for sperm to reach an egg. When taking Yaz, the uterine lining thins. This also helps prevent pregnancy by making it more difficult for a fertilized egg to attach to the uterine wall.

Yaz is different than many other oral contraceptives because of the active ingredient drospirenone, which has several unique characteristics.

  • It blocks a male sex hormone (androgen) that stimulates the production of sebum oil (a compound that clogs pores resulting in acne).
  • Blocking androgens also helps with treating polycystic ovarian syndrome and extra hair growth.
  • Drospirenone acts as a diuretic. This helps to avoid weight gain. This effect can also lead to increases in electrolyte levels such as potassium.

Yaz Dosage and Treatment

Yaz tablets are taken once a day by mouth. It is important to take the medication at the same time every day. Yaz pills are taken for 24 consecutive days, different than the 21 consecutive days typical of most oral contraceptives. After 24 days, inert pills are taken for 4 days.

Follow all directions exactly to maximize the effect of the medication. When taken correctly, the effectiveness of Yaz is over 99%. If taken improperly, the effectiveness is reduced.

Missed Dose

If a single dose is missed, it is important to take that dose as soon as you remember. Likelihood of pregnancy increases for every pill that is missed.

Side Effects of Yaz

Weight gain is one of the most common side effects of oral contraceptives. This occurs due to fluid retention. One of the active ingredients in Yaz (drospirenone) acts as a diuretic, which helps dispel fluids that might otherwise be retained. Yaz can still cause weight gain, but it might be less likely than other medications.

Common side effects:

  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Bloating
  • Abdominal pain
  • Weight gain or loss
  • Changes to menstrual periods including spotting, breakthrough bleeding, and decreased sex drive
  • Headache
  • Hair loss
  • Breast tenderness
  • Changes in appetite
  • Mood changes, fatigue, and irritability

Stop using Yaz and call your doctor immediately if you experience any of the more rare and serious side effects such as:

  • Hypertension
  • Migraines
  • Crohn’s disease
  • Problems with liver (dark urine, gray stools, yellow skin, etc.)
  • Inflamed pancreas
  • Dizziness
  • Impaired kidney function
  • Gallstones
  • Depression
  • Blood clot (sudden vision loss, stabbing chest pain, bloody cough)
  • Stroke (face drooping, arm weakness, speech difficulty, etc.)
  • Breast cancer
  • Gallbladder disease
  • Heart attack (chest pain, pain spreading from the chest to the jaw or shoulder)
  • Swelling in the legs or feet

Considerations and Precautions of Yaz

For women who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or who have had a baby within the past 4 weeks, Yaz should not be taken.

Smoking can greatly increase the risk of blood clots, heart attack, and stroke when combined with Yaz; particularly for women over 35 years old. PlushCare can prescribe medications for quitting smoking online.

Some drugs increase potassium which can have negative interactions with Yaz. Patients taking any of the following medications on a daily, long-term basis should have their potassium levels checked.

  • ACE Inhibitors (e.g. Vasotec)
  • Angiotensin-II receptor antagonists
  • Potassium-sparing diuretics
  • Potassium supplements
  • Heparin
  • Aldosterone antagonists
  • NSAIDs (ibuprofen, aspirin, Voltaren, etc.)

Drospirenone used to be a banned substance for athletes, but it was taken off the list and is now allowed.
