What is Repatha®?

Repatha® is a PCSK9 inhibitor, a class of medications designed to help lower LDL (bad) cholesterol levels by preventing the breakdown of LDL receptors in the liver. A greater number of active receptors enhances your body's ability to remove LDL cholesterol from the bloodstream, reducing overall levels.1

What is Repatha® used for?

Repatha® is prescribed for individuals who have tried more traditional high cholesterol treatment options and need additional help lowering their LDL levels, particularly those who:

  • Have familial hypercholesterolemia (a genetic condition causing high cholesterol)
  • Have atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD)
  • Do not respond adequately to statin therapy alone1

Because Repatha® is an advanced treatment, it is not typically a first-line option and is usually prescribed only when other cholesterol-lowering methods have proven insufficient.

Is Repatha® a statin?

Repatha® is not a statin. Statins work by reducing cholesterol production in the liver, while Repatha® helps the body remove LDL cholesterol more effectively. In many cases, Repatha® is prescribed in addition to a statin like Lipitor (atorvastatin) and Crestor (rosuvastatin) for maximum cholesterol reduction.1

FAQs about Repatha®

How does Repatha® work differently from other cholesterol medications?

Unlike statins, which reduce cholesterol production, Repatha® works by increasing the liver’s ability to remove LDL cholesterol from the bloodstream. It is often prescribed alongside statins for better results.1

How long does it take for Repatha® to lower cholesterol?

Many patients see results within 2 to 4 weeks, with maximum LDL reduction achieved within 12 weeks of consistent use.4

Can Repatha® be taken with other cholesterol-lowering medications?

Yes. Repatha® is commonly prescribed alongside statins and other cholesterol-lowering medications for enhanced effectiveness.1

Can I stop taking Repatha® once my cholesterol levels improve?

Repatha® is a long-term treatment. Stopping the medication may lead to an increase in LDL cholesterol. Always consult your doctor before making changes to your treatment.4

Does Repatha® have any dietary restrictions?

No specific dietary restrictions are required, but maintaining a heart-healthy low cholesterol diet can enhance its effectiveness.1

What should I do if I miss a dose of Repatha®?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it’s close to your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue as normal. Do not double up.6

Is Repatha® safe for people with diabetes?

Repatha® is generally considered safe for people with diabetes, but monitoring blood sugar levels is recommended, as some studies suggest it may slightly affect glucose metabolism.4
