How ondansetron ODT helps stop nausea and vomiting

Ondansetron is a generic version of Zofran®. It works by blocking the effects of chemicals in your body that can cause nausea and vomiting.1 It comes in convenient orally disintegrating tablets, oral tablets and an oral solution.

Ondansetron blocks chemicals in your body that stimulate the gag reflex and cause nausea, specifically, the serotonin receptors in your brain and the 5-HT3 receptors in your stomach.2 By doing this, the medicine helps control the urge to throw up, and calms your stomach.3

Key takeaways:

  • The effects of ondansetron ODT can last for up to eight hours. For persistent or chronic nausea, you may need to take the medication regularly or use an extended-release form. Always talk to your doctor about persistent symptoms despite medication usage as prescribed.
  • It can also help prevent postoperative nausea and vomiting and is available by prescription only. Our doctors will help you determine whether ondansetron is right for you and the best way to take it.*

*PlushCare doctors cannot treat all cases of nausea. Certain conditions require the expertise of specialists or in-person management for proper diagnosis and treatment.  If your PlushCare doctor cannot safely diagnose or treat your nausea, they will help guide you to the most appropriate care options, providing referrals and resources as needed.

Ondansetron uses

Ondansetron is primarily used for preventing nausea and vomiting caused by medical treatments such as surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation therapy.4 If you've ever had surgery, you know how miserable postoperative nausea can be, and ondansetron helps ensure you can recover without the added discomfort.

Along with keeping yourself hydrated and giving your body the nutrients it needs during cancer treatment, anti-nausea medications such as ondansetron can help relieve these unpleasant symptoms.

In addition to medical procedures and treatments, this medication can also be commonly used to relieve nausea from other causes, such as migraines, the stomach flu, and morning sickness during pregnancy.5

Dosages of ondansetron

For preventing nausea after surgery or chemotherapy, the typical dosage for adults is 8 mg taken a half hour to two hours before treatment. Then at the same dose every eight hours after the procedure as determined by your doctor.  If you're still feeling nauseous after your initial dose, your doctor may prescribe additional doses to help relieve your symptoms.

Ondansetron is safe for use by both adults and children, so you and your children can overcome symptoms effectively.

Dosages for children using ondansetron are usually based on weight, age, and ability to swallow pills, and are typically only 4 mg three times daily for children over 40 kg. If your child has trouble swallowing pills, oral forms by syringe or an IV may be used, particularly in cases of chemotherapy.

Post-operative and chemotherapy/radiation induced nausea will be managed by your surgeon and oncologist, respectively.

Ondansetron is safe for kids, but they may still experience side effects such as:

  • Constipation
  • Fatigue

Severe reactions are rare but call your doctor immediately if your child shows signs of an allergic reaction.

Side effects

Ondansetron typically has few side effects, but you may still experience them. The most frequently reported reactions include constipation, mild headaches, fatigue, and dry mouth.

Other, more severe reactions can include:

Allergic reactions
Diarrhea
Changes in heart rhythm
Muscle spasms

Contraindications and interactions

Before taking ondansetron, inform your doctor if you have any medical conditions, especially liver disease or a blood disorder.

Watch out for severe symptoms such as:

Seizures
Hallucinations
Impaired thinking
Seek medical help immediately if you experience symptoms of a severe allergic reaction like trouble breathing, chest tightness, and mouth or tongue swelling, as well as an irregular heartbeat. Be sure to read the information provided by the pharmacy to familiarize yourself with all possible side effects and their severity.

Cost

As the brand-name drug Zofran, this medication typically costs between $45 to $65 for nine tablets. Ondansetron is more affordable, ranging from $10 to $30 for the same dosage. Many brand-names offer discounts or coupons on their website that can save you 25-75% off the retail price.6 Ask your insurance provider if ondansetron qualifies for a lower copay.7
