What Is Flomax (Tamsulosin)?

Tamsulosin, also known as Flomax, is a medication used to treat symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It improves urine flow and decreases symptoms of BPH. Managing your BPH with tamsulosin may increase your quality of life. Reducing the symptoms of BPH allows men to urinate more easily, wake up less at night to urinate, and decreases the need to urinate urgently and often.

Tamsulosin uses also include treating lower urinary tract symptoms in males. If you have an enlarged prostate or BPH, you may experience sexual problems such as erectile dysfunction (ED).

Erectile dysfunction is remediable and can be treated with medications.

Tamsulosin is not like Viagra and is not used to treat ED.

How Does Flomax (Tamsulosin) Work?

Tamsulosin belongs to a class of drugs called Alpha 1 Blockers and works by relaxing the smooth muscles in the bladder and prostate, resulting in the improvement of urine flow and other symptoms associated with BPH.

Tamsulosin usually begins to work within the first 48 hours after you take it. It is advised to wait 30 minutes after eating to take the medication.

What is the Typical Dosage of Tamsulosin?

Tamsulosin is prescribed at different doses depending on your needs and treatment plan.

How frequently you take tamsulosin and at what dose depends on what your doctor prescribes. Always follow your prescribing doctor’s dosage instructions.

Tamsulosin comes as a capsule and is taken by mouth. It is recommended to take tamsulosin 30 minutes after the same meal each day. Capsules should be swallowed whole; do not crush, chew, or open.

What are Possible Side Effects of Flomax (Tamsulosin)?

The most common side effect of tamsulosin is a drop in blood pressure when standing after sitting, or laying down for a long period (orthostatic hypotension) especially after taking the very first dose. Orthostatic hypotension occurs in 6-19% of patients that take the first dose. First-dose of orthostatic hypotension may occur 4-8 hours after dosing.

Headache and dizziness are also common side effects. Be cautious if performing hazardous tasks, driving, or operating heavy machinery when starting tamsulosin or increasing your dosage.

What are Considerations and Precautions of Flomax (Tamsulosin)?

When taking Tamsulosin, be aware of certain precautions and considerations. If chest pain occurs after taking Tamsulosin, discontinue immediately and notify your healthcare provider.

It is recommended to rule out any prostate cancer before beginning tamsulosin. This can be done by completing a prostate cancer screening. Beginning at the age of 40, you should speak with your doctor about prostate screening.

You should not take Flomax if you are allergic to tamsulosin. To make sure Flomax is safe, make sure to tell your doctor if you have:

  • Liver disease
  • Kidney disease
  • A history of prostate cancer
  • Low blood pressure
  • An allergy to sulfa drugs

Do not take Flomax if you are taking any of the following medications:

  • Doxazosin (Cardura)
  • Prazosin (Minipress)

Flomax can also affect your pupils during cataract surgery. Tell your eye surgeon before your procedure about all the medications you are taking. If your eye doctor tells you to keep taking Flomax before surgery, do so.

Flomax is not approved for anyone under the age of 18 years old.

Tamsulosin should be discontinued if you have hypersensitivities (symptoms of an allergic reaction) such as:

  • Rash
  • Hives
  • Itching
  • Trouble breathing

Severe allergic reactions typically require emergency care.

Other medications for BPH are available and may be preferred by your provider to maximize your treatment plan.

What Are the Long-Term Effects of Taking Tamsulosin and How Long Should I Take Tamsulosin?

Tamsulosin is used for long-term treatment, and at the recommendation of your doctor, can be taken for a long time. As with any medication, side effects are possible and should be discussed with your healthcare provider.

Refer to your doctor before stopping taking tamsulosin.

How Long Does Tamsulosin Take to Work?

Complete relief of symptoms may take 2 to 6 weeks after starting treatment. Never increase or stop the dose before speaking with your healthcare provider. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember.
