About Demadex

Demadex is considered a loop diuretic, which functions by helping the body get rid of excess water and salt. Like any diuretic, this medication can only be used for treating edema (swelling caused by fluid retention) and hypertension (high blood pressure).

Demadex is typically used in adults with congestive heart failure, kidney disease, or liver disease. Demadex is available only by prescription. It is available in a generic formulation under the name torsemide.

Demadex may be prescribed as a tablet and injectable forms. Injectable forms are administered in healthcare settings such as hospitals, rather than used at home. It’s always important to follow the specific instructions on your prescription, as they can vary based on the formulation and dosage that you are prescribed. Demadex in tablet form (torsemide oral) is usually taken once or twice daily. The injectable form is used when torsemide oral is not tolerated or when quick diuresis is needed, and is administered by a healthcare professional.

If you are prescribed Demadex, be sure to take the loop diuretic as directed, unless your doctor specifically tells you to stop.

If you don’t adhere to your prescription, the loop diuretic may not adequately treat your edema or hypertension (high blood pressure).

Demadex's most common side effects include hypotension, electrolyte imbalance, and dehydration. Demadex should be taken with food or milk to prevent stomach upset.

Demadex uses

There are many FDA-approved uses for Demadex, but it may also be used off-label to treat other conditions. Your online medical professional may prescribe it for any of the following common reasons. It’s also possible that your physician may prescribe it for other reasons not listed here. If you have questions about why a medication is prescribed, ask your online doctor or pharmacist.

High blood pressure

As it functions as a diuretic, Demadex is sometimes prescribed to treat patients with high blood pressure, helping the body retain less fluid, which reduces the pressure in blood vessels.

Edema

Fluid retention (edema) occurs when the body contains too much fluid, leading to swelling in the legs, feet, and ankles. If left untreated, edema can lead to serious health complications such as kidney disease and heart disease. Demadex help with increased urination to reduce the amount of fluid in the body and relieve edema symptoms.

Chronic heart failure

Demadex is a medication used to treat patients with congestive heart failure. It helps with heart disease management by removing excess fluid from the body, reducing congestion, and improving heart function.

Renal disease

Diuretics are also used in chronic renal disease to treat edema.

Hepatic cirrhosis

Demadex is specifically approved to treat fluid retention in people with hepatic cirrhosis, a condition that occurs when the liver is damaged. Cirrhosis can cause fluid to build up in the abdomen (ascites) and sides (edema).

How to take Demadex

Your pharmacist will provide you with instructions on how to take your Demadex prescription.

Be sure to read your prescription label and follow the instructions. Call your doctor or pharmacy if you have any questions.

Demadex can come in different forms and doses, so be sure to follow the specific instructions on your prescription. It is typically prescribed once or twice daily.

Torsemide is available in two forms:

  • The oral form may be taken with or without food. Diuresis usually begins within an hour after taking the tablet.

  • The IV form is recommended when rapid action is needed. Diuresis usually begins within 10 minutes of administering the drug. This is administered in healthcare settings by professionals.

Recommended initial doses:

  • Edema from heart failure: 10 or 20 mg

  • Edema from kidney failure: 20 mg

  • Edema from liver failure: 5 or 10 mg

  • Hypertension: 5 mg. Demadex may be taken in combination with other hypertension medications

Demadex can cause dizziness, drowsiness, and lightheadedness. This is more likely to occur when you first start taking the drug or if you take a high dose. To avoid this problem, take Demadex at bedtime and get up slowly after lying down. These side effects can improve after a few days as your body adjusts to the medication. Call your doctor if these problems persist.

Demadex may cause fluid and electrolyte problems in people with liver disease and cause gouty episodes in people with gout. Demadex should not be used in people with a coma caused by hepatic encephalopathy, as it could worsen the condition. If you have any of these conditions, talk to a health care professional for medical advice.

Demadex also interacts with tobacco. The combined use of tobacco may worsen the side effects of Demadex.
