What is a Prescription Discount Card?

Prescription discount cards are physical cards designed to be used by consumers at pharmacies to receive a reduced price on the cost of prescription medications. These cards are available for use to patients paying for their medication in cash and without insurance (though not always).

Today, the price of prescription drugs continues to rise. According to the Kaiser Family Foundation, “One in four people taking prescription drugs report difficulty affording their medication and recent Kaiser Family Foundation opinion polling has found bipartisan support for government action to lower prescription drug costs.”

Here, we’ll be looking at how prescription discount cards work, what their benefits are, and how you can get one for yourself.

  • Book on our free mobile app or website.

Our doctors operate in all 50 states and same day appointments are available every 15 minutes.

  • See a doctor, get treatment and a prescription at your local pharmacy.

  • Use your health insurance just like you normally would to see your doctor.

What are the Benefits of a Prescription Discount Card?

Prescription discount cards reach the hands of patients a number of ways. Physicians, municipal and county governments, and even newspapers often distribute such cards. These cards can then be taken to the pharmacy and applied at checkout for a discount.

For example, take a prescription medication that costs $34 without insurance. When you apply a prescription discount card, the price you pay drops, sometimes as much as 70% or 80%. If you received just a 50% discount on the $34 medication, that means you only owe $17.

Sound too good to be true? A lot of people are skeptical of this system and ask, are prescription discount cards legitimate? The answer is yes, but understanding why is important.

How Do Prescription Discount Cards Work?

A free card that can cut your prescription costs in half warrants further explanation. The truth is, there’s a lot going on behind the scenes that make prescription discount cards profitable for the companies producing them.

For starters, when you use the drug discount card to fill your prescriptions, the pharmacy pays a transactional fee to the discount program. Pharmacies are willing to do this for a couple of reasons:

  • Pharmacies benefit from the additional items that customers usually buy in the store, and prescription discount cards will increase foot traffic.
  • Prescription discount cards are typically available to those without insurance who may otherwise not bother filling their prescription. As such, the card’s discount creates a new customer for the pharmacy.

The savings a prescription discount card can offer varies between the type of card and the pharmacy they’re used at. If you want to use a prescription card, it is always recommended that you do your online research first. Check to see what the typical cost of the prescription medication is without the card to ensure you’re indeed saving money.

When you use a prescription discount card, there is also a transferal of personal data to the company that makes the card. At the minimum, when a pharmacy applies a prescription discount card, it relays your name, birthday, medication, and the name of your doctor to the card company. This information may then be sold to a variety of stakeholders for marketing purposes.

How Do I Get a Prescription Discount Card?

Getting a prescription discount card is easy. The marketplace is flooded with options available to you, from cutting one out of a newspaper to asking your physician if they offer them. In fact, you can get your hands on a number of drug discount cards online that are free to print. However, not all prescription discount cards use the same model or reap the same benefits.

Can You Use a Prescription Discount Card With Insurance?

Typically, insurance will reduce the cost of medication far more than a prescription discount card. This means that cards cannot be used if you insurance already covers a greater margin than the prescription discount offered. However, for medications not covered by insurance, for those who are uninsured, or for those who have already maxed their insurance plans, prescription discount cards are a great way to save money on the staggering costs of medications.
