About Junel Fe birth control pills

Junel Fe is a combination of oral birth control, which delivers progestin and estrogen to affect the menstrual cycle and prevent ovulation. It also contains inactive pills, like other birth control tablets.

Like other birth control pills, this medication can only be used to prevent pregnancy. It is ineffective in preventing sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) because it will not prevent contact between the penis and skin, mucosa, and genital secretions. To prevent sexually transmitted diseases, it's necessary to use condoms.

Some conditions that Junel Fe birth control is known to treat include acne breakouts. Junel Fe is available only by prescription. It is available in a generic formulation and under different brand names, including Blisovi 24 Fe, Estrostep Fe, and Gildess 24 Fe, among others.

Junel Fe may be prescribed in tablet form. Hormone birth control tablets are bright yellow or pink, whereas non-hormone inactive pills are brown. It’s always important to follow the specific instructions on your prescription, as they can vary based on the formulation and dosage you are prescribed.

If you are prescribed Junel Fe, complete the entire course of oral birth control unless your doctor specifically tells you to stop.

If you don’t complete your prescription, the birth control pill may not prevent pregnancy successfully.

Junel Fe uses

There is one FDA-approved use for Junel Fe, but it may also be used off-label to treat other conditions. Your online medical professional may prescribe it for the following reasons. It’s also possible that your healthcare provider may prescribe it for different reasons not listed here. Ask your online doctor or pharmacist if you have questions about how it is prescribed.

  • Pregnancy prevention

The only FDA-approved use of this hormonal birth control is to prevent pregnancy. It contains both birth control hormones, i.e., estrogen and progestin, and affects the menstrual cycle to act on ovulation. The hormonal birth control pills also prevent pregnancy by altering cervical mucus. That way, it becomes more difficult for sperm to reach and fertilize an egg.

In addition to active pills, Junel Fe 1/20 contains placebo or inactive pills which contain iron (hence Fe in its name). Junel Fe 1/20, like other drugs for birth control, may have indirect benefits such as a reduction in endometriosis pain. Endometriosis is a serious condition indicated by very painful periods. Medical tests, including laboratory tests, are necessary to diagnose endometriosis and treat it adequately. Don't rely on birth control alone to manage this health problem.

  • Acne treatment

Acne treatment is an off-label use of Junel Fe. In other words, it is not approved by FDA for the treatment of acne, but it can be used for this purpose. Like other hormonal birth control combination pills, Junel Fe decreases functional androgen levels. As a result, the production of sebum (oil) decreases, which leads to acne prevention and improved management.

Junel Fe side effects

  • The side effects associated with taking Junel Fe are typically mild. Most Junel Fe side effects are associated with nausea and vomiting. Junel Fe has some common side effects. They may include:

    • Nausea

    • Vomiting

    • Bloating

    • Headache

    • Breast tenderness

    • Fluid retention (swelling of ankles/feet)

    • Weight gain

    • Vaginal bleeding between periods (spotting)

Other side effects, which are less common but might be more severe, could include:

    • Lumps in the breast

    • Mental/mood changes (e.g. worsening of depression)

    • Severe abdominal pain

    • Continuous spotting or sudden heavy bleeding

    • Dark urine

    • Yellowing of eyes/skin

    • serious allergic reaction

    • Chest pain

You should call your doctor if you notice any of these side effects or if you develop any other new or concerning symptoms. Tell your doctor immediately or seek emergency medical help if you experience serious symptoms of allergic reactions to this birth control.

Serious allergic reaction to this birth control is indicated by trouble breathing, dizziness, rash, and itching.

How to take Junel Fe

Your pharmacist will provide you with instructions on how to take your Junel Fe prescription. You will also get a patient information leaflet with this birth control. While many people skip the patient information leaflets, you should read them thoroughly.

The patient information leaflet contains all information you need to know about hormonal birth control, including how to take it and what to do for the best effect.

Be sure to read your prescription label and patient information leaflet and follow the instructions. Call your doctor or pharmacy if you have any questions.

Junel Fe can come in different forms and doses, so be sure to follow the specific instructions on your prescription. It is typically prescribed one active pill once a day for 21 days, then, after the last active pill, take inactive pills once a day for seven days.

Your period begins during the fourth week of the pack. Once the package is gone, start with the new birth control pack the very next day. The process with active and inactive pills continues.

What to avoid while taking Junel Fe

Junel Fe has several possible drug interactions, including aromatase inhibitors (e.g., exemestane and anastrozole), tamoxifen, ospemifene, tizanidine, tranexamic acid, some combination products to treat chronic hepatitis C, HIV drugs, anticonvulsants, St. John’s wort, and others.

Don’t change what you are taking without checking with your doctor or pharmacist. That includes other medications or supplements, as well as over-the-counter drugs.

It is important to inform a doctor if you start taking new medications when taking Junel Fe. The doctor will explain whether there’s a chance of drug interactions or if the new drug could decrease the effectiveness of these birth control pills and interfere with your efforts to prevent pregnancy.

Ask your healthcare professional or pharmacist if it is acceptable to consume alcohol while taking Junel Fe.

Some research shows that regular alcohol consumption may increase the risk of missed doses. Alcohol may also reduce the medication’s ability to do its job, making it harder to prevent pregnancy.

You may also want to avoid some antibiotics because they can make birth control pills less effective. Other things to avoid when taking these pills include failing to take the tablets at the same time every day and being reluctant to inform a doctor about health problems you may have.

These pills may not be suitable for people with certain health concerns, such as blood clots. Hormonal birth control such as this one can increase the risk of blood clots or aggravate them. Blood clots can cause major cardiovascular complications, including a heart attack.

Avoid taking this birth control pill if you're pregnant or breastfeeding. It can decrease breast milk production. Reduced breast milk production means low supply, which is what you want to avoid as a pregnant or breastfeeding woman.

To increase breast milk production, you may want to avoid Junel Fe 1/20 and other forms of birth control of this kind.

If you have diabetes, this birth control can affect blood sugar levels. You may also want to avoid using Junel Fe 1/20 with diabetes medication. Besides diabetes, having the abovementioned blood clots also requires consulting a doctor before taking this birth control.

Medication alternatives to Junel Fe

If your healthcare provider prefers to put you on another treatment altogether, they may suggest other forms of contraception or a birth control pill in another drug class. Here are some common doctor-recommended birth control alternatives based on your health issue:

  • Blood clots and blood clotting disorders

  • Breast cancer

    • Non-hormonal IUD

  • Depression or other mood disorders

    • Hormonal IUD

    • Extended monophasic birth control pills

  • Diabetes

Junel Fe prescription FAQs

  • How much does Junel Fe cost?

The price of Junel Fe 1/20 varies from one pharmacy to another. Without insurance, Junel Fe 1/20 usually costs around $30 for a packet of 28 tablets. However, the costs of this birth control can go higher, up to $48. However, there are many ways to get Junel Fe 1/20 for less. Good examples are copay cards, printable coupons, free samples, trial offers, and many others.

  • How can I refill my Junel Fe prescription?

In order to refill the Junel Fe 1/20 prescription, you need to see a doctor first. It doesn’t have to be in person. You can see a doctor online and sign up for a service that will handle all your prescriptions and birth control refills for you, such as PlushCare. Then, you just pick up your pills in the pharmacy.

  • How long after starting Junel Fe is it effective?

Junel Fe 1/20 is a combination pill. If you start taking the birth control pill within five days after your period begins, it starts working immediately. On the flip side, if you start taking the pill at any other time, you will need to wait for seven days for Junel Fe 1/20 to be effective. If you want immediate effectiveness, you will need to take this birth control within a few days after your period begins.

  • Can Junel Fe affect your period?

Junel Fe 1/20 can affect your period. Birth control pills may lead to skipped periods and bleeding between periods. Generally speaking, Junel Fe 1/20 is no different than other hormonal birth control pills and contraception methods. All of them can impact menstrual bleeding and cause irregular periods. Consult a doctor if you keep having irregular periods.

  • Can you take Junel Fe on an empty stomach?

You can take Junel Fe 1/20 with or without food. But, if the birth control pills cause an upset stomach, you may want to take them with food. The most important thing is to take it at the same time every day. For many people, taking Junel Fe 1/20 at bedtime or with a meal works best.

  • Who should not take Junel Fe?

People who are allergic to Ethinyl estradiol, norethindrone, ferrous fumarate, and other estrogens, progestin, and iron products shouldn’t take Junel Fe. It's useful to keep in mind serious allergic reaction is unlikely to happen with this birth control.

If you have a personal history of blood clots, blood clotting disorders including deep vein thrombosis, high blood pressure, cancer, high cholesterol or triglycerides, diabetes, depression, gallbladder problems, migraine, heart problems, jaundice, kidney disease, liver disease, stroke, swelling, unexplained vaginal bleeding, and thyroid problems you shouldn’t take Junel Fe birth control before your doctor confirms it’s safe.

For that reason, it is incredibly important for women who want a prescription for Junel Fe (and other birth control pills) to disclose their medical history and inform a healthcare provider about their health status. The doctor will make the best decision and prescribe this type of hormonal birth control if they conclude it’s okay.

Also, if you’re taking certain medications, you may not be able to take Junel Fe 1/20. These include aromatase inhibitors, drugs for the treatment of seizures, St. John’s wort, and others. Read the section with things to avoid when taking Junel Fe 1/20 to learn more.

Tell your doctor if you're experiencing any issues with this birth control, especially if you have adverse reactions such as chest pain. While very rare, they can happen in some cases.

  • What happens if I miss a dose of Junel Fe?

If one active pill is missed in the first three weeks, you should take it as soon as possible. Take the next pill at the regular time and continue taking one tablet a day until you finish the pack.

If you miss two consecutive active pills in the first two weeks, take them as soon as possible. Take the next two active tablets the next day. Then start taking one active pill a day. In this case, to prevent pregnancy, additional non-hormonal birth control should be used as a backup if you have sex within seven days of missing tablets. Good choice of backup birth control is the condom.

If you miss two consecutive active pills in weeks three and four or three or three consecutive active tablets at any time, you need to throw out the rest of the pack and start with the new one the same day. You should also use backup birth control, i.e., non-hormonal contraception, if you have sex within seven days after missing three pills. Additional reliable birth control helps prevent pregnancy and keeps you protected.

  • What happens if I take too much Junel Fe?

If you take too much Junel Fe 1/20, continue taking the rest of the packet as usual. Nothing will likely happen if you take one extra birth control pill. You don’t need to go to the emergency room. But taking several birth control pills may make you feel sick, vomit, and have vaginal bleeding. You don’t need to seek medical advice unless the symptoms are severe.
