What is BuSpar?

BuSpar (buspirone hydrochloride) is a medication used to help alleviate short-term anxiety and treat anxiety disorders. It is manufactured by Bristol-Meyers Squibb and was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1986.

How Does BuSpar work?

BuSpar is from a class of medications known as azaperones. It works by affecting the neurotransmitters in your brain such as dopamine and serotonin. BuSpar helps relieve anxiety by increasing the action of serotonin receptors in your brain. This is known as a serotonin receptor agonist.

BuSpar is commonly used in combination with other medications that help relieve anxiety and depression, such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). It is also sometimes prescribed if other medications have had too many side effects or have been ineffective.

BuSpar Dosage and Treatment

BuSpar should be taken by mouth, usually two to three times a day.

The pill can be split in two to get the correct dosage as prescribed. You may want to ask your pharmacist how to split the tablet.

This medication can be taken with or without food, but it is important to take it in the same fashion consistently so that BuSpar can be absorbed the same way every time.

The dosage of this medication will be based on your specific medical condition and how you respond to therapy.

A common starting dosage is 5 mg twice a day. Your doctor may increase your dose incrementally by 5 mg every few days, with a maximum dose of 60 mg.

Most patients do well at a dose of 15 mg to 30 mg.

It is important to use this medication regularly in order to get the most benefit. To help you remember, try taking BuSpar at the same time every day.

When first taking BuSpar, symptoms such as anxiety or restlessness can sometimes get worse before they improve. It can take up to four weeks for this medication to take full effect.

Your doctor will work with you to decide how long you should take BuSpar. Generally, this medication can be taken for several months up to a year. Your doctor will gradually reduce your dosage over time when it is time to stop taking BuSpar.

This will help reduce any possible withdrawal symptoms.

Benefits of BuSpar

BuSpar may make you feel less irritable. Because this medication affects the neurotransmitters in your brain, it can also reduce symptoms such as sweating, trouble sleeping, and the racing heartbeat that can come from anxiety.

This drug may help you relax, think more clearly, give you less worry, and help you want to take part in everyday activities.

There are no known issues associated with taking BuSpar for long term use.

Side Effects of Buspar

Most people that use this medication do not experience serious side effects. However, you should notify your doctor if you experience any of the following symptoms:

  • Blurred vision
  • Tiredness
  • Drowsiness
  • Nausea
  • Lightheadedness
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Nervousness
  • Excitement
  • Dry mouth
  • Weakness, numbness
  • Constipation, diarrhea

Rarely, in about 2% of people taking this medication, patients may experience movement disorders such as the following:

  • Stiffness
  • Shakiness
  • Tremors
  • Awkward gait
  • Difficulty moving facial muscles
  • Tardive dyskinesia

In rare cases, these conditions can be permanent.

Seek medical attention right away if you experience any unusual and/or uncontrolled movements, especially in your arm, legs, face, or mouth.

Considerations and Precautions of BuSpar

BuSpar is removed from your body by your liver enzymes. You should consult with your doctor if you have compromised liver function. This medication can also affect your blood glucose levels.

Talk to your doctor if you have a pre-existing medical condition such as diabetes.

If you are breastfeeding, BuSpar is not recommended for use as this medication may enter your breast milk.

Drug Interactions

BuSpar can interact with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) and can cause an increase in blood pressure.

Be cautious when combining BuSpar with blood thinners such as Coumadin. This can cause an increase in bleeding.

Avoid using alcohol while taking BuSpar. Drinking alcohol and taking BuSpar can cause drowsiness and a feeling of lightheadedness. More serious side effects when mixing this medication with alcohol can include problems with memory, breathing, and muscle control.

It is not recommended to drink grapefruit juice or eat grapefruit while taking BuSpar. Grapefruit may increase the amount of BuSpar in your blood.
