About Viibryd

Viibryd is considered a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor , which functions by creating a better balance in neurotransmitters, primarily through the inhibition of serotonin reuptake in the brain. Allowing more serotonin to hang out in the brain can help many people feel better. Although other selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors can be used to treat conditions like anxiety and obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), this medication can only be used for depression. It is ineffective against other psychiatric disorders, such as bipolar disorder, that may require stronger medication or a different treatment approach.

Viibryd is approved to treat include major depressive disorder, but it may also be helpful for people with anxiety and milder depression. Viibryd is available only by prescription. It is available in a generic formulation called vilazodone, which has the same active ingredient as brand name Viibryd.

Viibryd may be prescribed as a capsule. It’s always important to follow the specific instructions on your prescription, as they can vary based on the formulation and dosage that you are prescribed.

If you are prescribed Viibryd, be sure to take the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor as directed unless your doctor specifically tells you to stop.

If you don’t complete your prescription, the antidepressant may not adequately manage your major depressive disorder. If you suddenly stop using Viibryd, you may experience worsening depression and withdrawal symptoms. Viibryd is best used in the treatment of major depressive disorder (MDD) often alongside other treatment options, such as therapy.

Viibryd uses

The FDA approved Viibryd specifically for treating major depressive disorder (MDD), but it may also be used off-label for other conditions. Your online doctor may prescribe it for any of the following common reasons. It’s also possible that your health care provider may prescribe it for other reasons not listed here. If you have questions about why a medication is prescribed, ask your online doctor.

Major depressive disorder (MDD)

In the majority of cases, Viibryd is used in the treatment of major depressive disorder. Through Plushcare, your online doctor may diagnose and treat you directly, or refer you to psychiatry for ongoing management. As with any medication, they will discuss details regarding common adverse reactions and side effects. Viibryd is generally used in adult patients and not pediatric patients, as it has not been sufficiently studied for use in children.

Viibryd medication side effects

The side effects associated with taking Viibryd are typically mild. Most Viibryd side effects are associated with sleep and the digestion. Viibryd has some common side effects which may include:

  • Nausea

  • Vomiting

  • Diarrhea

  • Insomnia

Some people may experience abnormal dreams when they use the medication.

Other side effects, which are less common but might be more severe, could include:

  • Low sodium: In some cases, the patient may experience low sodium when they use Viibryd to treat a mental illness. Ask your doctor for medical advice about side effects that can affect your sodium levels. This is especially important if you have a personal or family history of low sodium problems.

  • Allergic reactions: There is a small risk of experiencing allergic reactions when you use Viibryd. These adverse reactions can cause swelling, trouble breathing, hives, and a severe skin rash. You have an increased risk if you previously experienced allergic reactions to serotonergic drugs.

  • Serotonin syndrome: Serotonin syndrome can happen when serotonin levels in the body reach unsafe levels. Patients may experience panic attacks, trouble sleeping, agitation, and more dangerous symptoms like high fever, seizures that could even be fatal. It is important for patients who use Viibryd to look out for these serious adverse reactions. The risk of serotonin syndrome is increased among people who take other antidepressants with this medication, such as tricyclic antidepressants.

You should call your doctor if you notice any of these side effects, or call 911 immediately if you develop severe side effects. Use of Viibryd in young children under age 18 is not advised because there is no sufficient evidence to support the safety of antidepressant drugs in children. This is why it is generally advised for adolescents and young adults who are older than 18.

How to take Viibryd

Your pharmacist will provide you with instructions on how to take your Viibryd prescription.

Be sure to read your prescription label and follow the instructions. Call your doctor or pharmacy if you have any questions.

Viibryd can come in different forms and doses, so be sure to follow the specific instructions on your prescription. It is typically prescribed as only a single dose per day.

Taking too little of the drug leads to inadequate drug concentrations in the blood. This reduces the effects that the Viibryd will have on mental illnesses, such as major depressive disorder (MDD).

Do not take Viibryd with other drugs, such as nonsteroidal anti inflammatory drugs. Rather leave some time between these doses. Adverse effects can occur if you use the antidepressant medications with other drugs that also affect your serotonin levels.

What to avoid while taking Viibryd medication

Viibryd has more than eight recognized drug interactions. Don’t change what you are taking without checking with your doctor or pharmacist. That includes other medications or supplements, as well as over-the-counter drugs.

Tell the prescribing healthcare provider if you use any of the following medications:

  • Mephenytoin

  • St. John's wort supplements

  • Diuretic pills

  • Blood thinners (Jantoven, Coumadin, Warfarin)

  • Medicine for migraines (Imitrex, Treximet, Sumatriptan, Maxalt)

  • Tramadol

You should also not use the medication with other drugs that are classified as antidepressant medications unless directed by your doctor. If you use it with a blood thinner, you may experience unusual bleeding. You have an increased risk of serotonin syndrome if you combine this medication with other mental illness drugs that are used to treat anxiety and mood disorders.

It is important to tell your healthcare provider about a personal or family history of suicidal thoughts when taking Viibryd. Also, make sure your healthcare provider knows about any existing medical conditions you have. Narrow angle closure glaucoma, a history of seizures, existing sexual problems, kidney disease, and liver disease all plays a role in the prescription of Viibryd. Be careful about using Viibryd for the treatment of bipolar disorder. If you have bipolar disorder, you will need to use a different kind of medication in order to help stabilize your mood (mood stabilizers).

Your doctor can provide details about potential drug interactions.

If you have a history of drug addiction or currently drink alcohol, then make a note of this too. You can ask your doctor for medical advice about side effects and adverse reactions that may occur.

Drug interactions can occur with certain herbal and nutritional supplements too. Keep this in mind and talk to your doctor about these potential drug interactions.

Ask your doctor or pharmacist if it is acceptable to consume alcohol while taking Viibryd.

Medication alternatives

If your healthcare provider prefers to put you on another treatment, they may suggest another selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor or an antidepressant in another drug class. Here are some common doctor-recommended alternatives based on your health issue:

Bipolar disorder

This medication is generally not considered a safe or effective choice for people with bipolar disorder, as it can lead patients to having manic episodes. Other drugs, like Abilify, Seroquel or Lamictal may provide more effective and safe results for this type of mental illness. Your healthcare provider will analyze your condition and weigh the risks of adverse effects with different medications. The ideal treatment for these psychiatric disorders may also be different among young adults and older patients. Your doctor may also refer to clinical trials to determine the most appropriate treatment.

  • Mood stabilizers (Valproate, Lamotrigine, Carbamazepine)

  • Anti Anxiety medication (Diazepam, Oxazepam, Alprazolam)

  • Antipsychotic medication (Lurasidone, Quetiapine, Cariprazine)

Other serotonergic drugs may also be used alongside these drugs to treat bipolar disorder. This may also include other antidepressants that fall into other categories.

Viibryd prescription FAQs

How much does Viibryd cost?

The cost largely depends on where your healthcare provider sends the prescription, and if you are paying with or without insurance. Without insurance and with prescription coupons, one month supplies can cost less than $50.

How can I refill my Viibryd prescription?

It is best to keep your prescription of this antidepressant medication with one pharmacy in your local area. This allows you to pick it up on a monthly or every three-month basis, in conjunction with your follow up visits with your doctor.

What can you not take with Viibryd?

Do not take medicine that is part of MAO inhibitor therapy or additional norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors. You should also be careful about antiplatelet drugs, as this causes an increased risk of bleeding. Tell your doctor about any other medications that you take.

What happens if you drink alcohol while taking Viibryd?

If you use alcohol with Viibryd, you may experience adverse reactions. This includes worsening depression, including severe depression as a side effect. This adverse reaction may also alter the way that the medication helps you treat your depressive symptoms.

What happens if you take Viibryd on an empty stomach?

The medication may cause adverse reactions in the gastrointestinal tract, including stomach irritation. This may lead to pain symptoms.

Is it better to take Viibryd in the morning or at night?

It is best to choose a specific time of the day to take the medication. Ask your doctor for medical advice if you are not sure about the right timing to treat your mental illness. This reduces the risk of a missed dose, which can lead to certain withdrawal symptoms or even worsening symptoms.

Who should not take Viibryd?

You should not take Viibryd if you regularly use nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs This causes an increased risk of bleeding. Unusual bleeding can sometimes become serious. You should also not take Viibryd for a mental illness that is not approved to be treated with this medication. Do not take the medication if you already use antidepressants that cause an increased risk of serotonin syndrome.

What happens if I miss a dose of Viibryd?

A missed dose increases the risk of withdrawal symptoms and worsening depression symptoms. If you take a double dose to make up, then you also increase your risk of serotonin syndrome. Take the missed dose only if there are still about eight hours left before your next dose.

What happens if I take too much Viibryd?

The risk of serotonin syndrome and other adverse effects increases significantly if you take too much of the medication. More of the drug will not lead to better treatment for your mental illnesses. It only raises the risk of adverse effects. Contact a poison control center if you think you took too much Viibryd, and call 911 right away if you notice any symptoms.
