About Humulin N

Humulin N is considered intermediate-acting insulin, which functions by helping to keep your blood sugar levels from getting too high blood sugar after you eat. Like any insulin, this medication can only be used to manage diabetes. It is ineffective against any other condition because it will not reduce blood sugar levels in people who do not have diabetes mellitus.

Some conditions that Humulin N is known to treat include type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

Humulin N is available only by prescription. It is available in a generic formulation under different brand names, including prefilled Humulin® N KwikPen® or in a Humulin N U-100 vial.

Humulin N may be prescribed as an injection only or as an injection with a pump. It's always important to follow the specific instructions on your prescription, as they can vary based on the formulation and dosage you are prescribed.

If you are prescribed Humulin N, be sure to complete the full course of the medication unless your doctor specifically tells you to stop.

If you don't complete your prescription, the insulin may not fully treat your diabetes, and your blood sugar levels may become difficult to manage. Use Humulin N properly.

Humulin N uses

There are two FDA-approved uses for Humulin N, but it may also be used off-label to treat other conditions. Your online medical professional may prescribe it for any of the following common reasons. It's also possible that your healthcare provider may prescribe it for other reasons not listed here. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist if you have questions about why a medication is prescribed.

  • Manage type 1 and type 2 diabetes

Humulin N is primarily used to help keep your blood sugar levels from getting too high after you eat. It's always important to follow the dosing schedule prescribed by your doctor, as this will vary based on the formulation and dosage you are prescribed.

  • Manage diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA)

Humulin N may also be used to help treat diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), a serious complication of diabetes that can be life-threatening. If you have DKA, your blood sugar levels become too high, and your body starts to produce ketones. These ketones build up in the blood and can cause your blood to become acidic.

Your pharmacist will provide you with instructions on how to take your Humulin N prescription.

Be sure to read your prescription label and follow the instructions. Call your doctor or pharmacy if you have any questions.

Humulin N can come in different forms and doses, so follow the specific instructions on your prescription. It is typically prescribed either once or twice per day, before mealsSome specific instructions may include a change in diet or exercise, but always follow your doctor's schedule.

Be sure to clean the injection site with rubbing alcohol before each insulin dose. Changing where you inject each time is important to lessen the risk of problems or damage under the skin. Inject the insulin into the upper arm, stomach area or the thigh, changing the injection site every time.

The insulin should be clear and colorless. Do not inject the Humulin N if it is discolored or contains particles.

Remember not to share your pen device with another person, even if the needle is changed.

What to avoid while taking Humulin N

Humulin N has four drug interactions. Don't change what you take without checking with your doctor or pharmacist. That includes other medications or supplements, as well as over-the-counter drugs.

It is important to adjust the dose of these drugs when taking Humulin N. Some of these drugs should not be taken together.

Ask your doctor or pharmacist if consuming alcohol while taking Humulin N is acceptable.

Some research shows that regular alcohol consumption may decrease the effectiveness of Humulin N.

Alcohol may also reduce the medication's ability to do its job, making it harder to control your blood sugar levels. You should avoid drinking alcohol while taking this medication.
