What is Demadex?

Demadex is a brand-name loop diuretic. The drug can be found under the generic name, torsemide.

Similar to thiazide diuretics (such as Esidrix), loop diuretics are commonly used to treat edema (swelling caused by fluid retention) and hypertension (high blood pressure). Using Demadex for treatment of edema is usually associated with heart, kidney, or liver failure.

How Does Demadex Work?

Demadex works by stimulating urination so that extra fluid and salts are removed from the body, reducing inflammation.

Normally salts like NaCl are reabsorbed in the kidneys where they attach to a carrier protein. Demadex acts by attaching to that carrier protein instead, thus blocking the protein from binding to salts and allowing the salts to pass. With loop diuretics, this process occurs in a particular part of the kidney called the loop of Henle.

Loop diuretics and thiazide diuretics work on different parts of the kidney. Because of this, loop diuretics such as Demadex are better for people with preexisting kidney problems whereas thiazide diuretics are better for people with normally functioning kidneys.

It is poorly understood how diuretics cause blood pressure to lower.

Demadex Dosage and Treatment

Demadex is taken orally as a tablet once a day, with or without food. Dosages vary among individuals depending on what their edema is associated with, or if they are taking Demadex for hypertension. Always follow the directions on the prescription label given to you by your doctor.

Recommended initial doses:

  • Edema from heart failure: 10 or 20 mg
  • Edema from kidney failure: 20 mg
  • Edema from liver failure: 5 or 10 mg
  • Hypertension: 5 mg. Demadex may be taken in combination with other hypertension medications.

For all cases, dosages may be increased slowly from the initial dose to attain the desired effect with minimal side effects.

Benefits of Demadex

Demadex can help reduce swelling associated with certain liver, kidney, or heart problems, as well as hypertension. Demadex is more effective in treating edema compared to other types of diuretics such as Esidrix (a thiazide diuretic) but is less effective as a medication for hypertension.

Generic Demadex (torsemide) can also be prescribed online.
