Astepro is an antihistamine nasal spray that blocks histamines4 the chemicals responsible for allergy symptoms like sneezing, itching, and congestion – common signs of chronic rhinitis. By preventing histamine overreaction, Astepro helps reduce discomfort from allergens.5

Our doctors are here to help you get an Astepro prescription online and help manage rhinitis and other allergies.
What is Astepro?
Astepro (generic Azelastine) is an antihistamine nasal spray available in two strengths: as the over-the-counter medication Astepro Allergy (azelastine HCI) 0.15%, or as the prescription Astepro (azelastine HCl) 0.10% 137 mcg.1, 2, 3 The over-the-counter version has a slightly higher dose and sweeter taste.3
What is Astepro used for?
Astepro, in both of its strength levels, is intended to ameliorate symptoms associated with seasonal and perennial upper respiratory allergies, known as rhinitis, that are caused by both indoor or outdoor allergens.2, 4 Typical allergens include pet dander, pollen, dust, and mold.5 When these allergens impact your nasal passages and cause you discomfort, Astepro can provide relief.1, 5
How does Astepro work?
Astepro dosage
Astepro is available in two strengths:1, 2, 3
- Astepro Allergy (azelastine HCI) 0.15%, available over the counter
- Astepro (azelastine HCl) 0.10% 137 mcg by prescription.
Astepro side effects
Most of the side effects involved with taking Astepro (0.15% or .10%) are relatively mild. However, you should always discuss any reactions you have with your doctor if they are uncomfortable or persist.
Common side effects:
Rare but serious side effects:
In rare cases, Astepro can cause serious allergic reactions, the signs of which include difficulty breathing, rashes on the skin, dizziness, chest tightness, or swelling.4, 7 If you experience any of these symptoms, seek medical attention immediately by calling 911.
Astepro vs Flonase
Another commonly used nasal spray to manage allergies is Flonase. Unlike Astepro, which is an antihistamine spray, Flonase is an intranasal steroids (INS) spray that works to relieve allergy symptoms by reducing inflammation.1 Therefore, while each medication can relieve seasonal or perennial allergies, the mechanisms of action between the two differ. Adults and children 12 and over are generally able to use both at the same time to relieve symptoms, but you should always discuss your treatment plan with your online doctor prior to using Flonase alongside Astepro.8
Another key difference between Astepro and Flonase is how long they take to work: Astepro typically provides relief within about 15 minutes, while Flonase generally takes a few hours.9, 10 The dosing also differs, so it is important to follow your doctor and pharmacist’s instructions for using both nasal sprays.11
The side effects caused by Flonase also slightly differ from the ones you can expect from Astepro, and they include nausea, sore throat, and coughing or wheezing.11 Flonase is also not usually recommended for long-term use in children, as the steroid may cause slowed growth.12
Frequently asked questions about Astepro
Is Astepro safe for children?
Astepro Allergy (azelastine HCI) 0.15% is approved for use in children ages 6 and up to treat nasal allergy symptoms.1 Children ages 6 to 11 should only take 1 spray of Astepro in each nostril every 12 hours.1
Prescription Astepro (azelastine HCl) 0.10% 137 mcg, meanwhile, is safe for use in children with year-round allergies who are between the ages of 6 months and 6 years old, and for use in children with seasonal allergies ages 2 to 6.2
Because it is an antihistamine and not a steroid, Astepro has not been linked to pediatric growth suppression.1
Can I use Astepro during pregnancy or while breastfeeding?
Can Astepro be used alongside other allergy medications?
You should always consult your doctor before combining use of allergy medications, especially ones that can make you drowsy.6 However, Astepro is sometimes recommended for use alongside oral allergy medications.
How quickly does Astepro start working?
Astepro typically provides relief from allergy symptoms within about 15 minutes.9 It can also prevent allergy symptoms when taken approximately 2 weeks prior to the presence of allergens (for instance, before seasonal allergies tend to impact you).11
Do I need a prescription to get Astepro?
Astepro Allergy (azelastine HCI) 0.15% is available over the counter..1, 2, 3 Astepro (azelastine HCl) 0.10% 137 mcg requires an online prescription.1, 2, 3
