Ortho Tri Cyclen Birth Control Reviews

Whether you’re starting or switching your birth control, you want to have a good idea about what to expect. Reading about potential side effects is one thing, but it can be more helpful to read reviews from people who have actually taken the birth control pill you’re thinking about.

Birth control medications like Ortho Tri Cyclen do not protect against gonorrhea, chlamydia, HIV, or other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), some of which have no side effects.

Only a doctor can decide whether Ortho Tri Cyclen is right for you. The following information is for informational purposes only.

  • Book on our free mobile app or website.

Our doctors operate in all 50 states and same day appointments are available every 15 minutes.

  • See a doctor, get treatment and a prescription at your local pharmacy.

  • Use your health insurance just like you normally would to see your doctor.

What Kind of Birth Control Is Ortho Tri Cyclen?

Ortho Tri Cyclen is a birth control pill containing two hormones, ethinyl estradiol and norgestimate. These hormones prevent ovulation as well as trigger changes in your cervical mucus and uterine lining that make it harder for sperm to reach your uterus and for fertilized eggs to implant themselves.

What Is Ortho Tri Cyclen Lo?

Ortho Tri Cyclen Lo (also called Ortho-Cyclen) has the same main ingredients as Ortho Tri Cyclen, but in much lower doses. Both medications are used to prevent pregnancy, but Ortho Tri-Cyclen is also prescribed to treat acne.

Is Ortho Tri Cyclen Generic?

No, Ortho Tri Cyclen is a name brand. However, it is also sold as a generic named norgestimate-ethinyl estradiol.

Generic medications are often more affordable than their branded counterparts.

Who Should NOT Take Ortho Tri Cyclen?

Even though it is generally considered safe, Ortho Tri Cyclen is not right for everybody. Always tell your doctor about your medical history and any medications you take. Be especially certain to mention if you smoke, are overweight, or have ever had:

  • Blood clots
  • Cancer
  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • Abnormal breast exam
  • Diabetes
  • Depression
  • Thyroid problems
  • Kidney or liver disease
  • Heart problems
  • Gallbladder problems
  • Migraines

Make sure you tell your doctor if you take any of the following medications:

  • Tizanidine
  • Ospemifene
  • Tamoxifen
  • Tranexamic acid
  • Certain combination products used to treat chronic hepatitis C
  • Modafinil
  • Griseofulvin
  • Rifamycins (like rifampin, rifabutin)
  • St John’s wort
  • HIV drugs
  • Drugs used to treat seizures

What Is the Generic Name for Ortho Tri Cyclen?

Ortho Tri Cyclen is available under the generic name of norgestimate-ethinyl estradiol. All these medications have the same active ingredient but different inactive ingredients, which may lead to varying side effects.

Is Ortho Tri Cyclen a Good Birth Control?

Like many birth control pills, Ortho Tri Cyclen is up to 99% effective when taken at the same time every day. Since everybody reacts differently to it, it’s impossible to say whether it will be a good birth control for you.

A doctor can help you determine if Ortho Tri Cyclen is right for you.

Is Ortho Tri Cyclen Discounted?

The brand name of Ortho Tri Cyclen is no longer available. However, the generic form is very affordable, especially with coupons that can be found online.

Ortho Tri Cyclen Reviews

11/8/2020 – “I first started using this birth control a month ago and it gave me really bad headaches and I never had acne before but since I have been on it I’ve gotten little bumps on my forehead and under my eyes. It also gives me really bad mood swings.”

8/19/2019 – “I’ve been on this birth control for 6 months, it seemed to help slightly with my acne scarring, but I had a full face breakout recently, and I have gained weight which my body isn’t used to. It kept my periods regular which I have never had, and had very slight cramps. Other than the weight gain I’d say it’s a good pill. But I’m going to change to a different one to find the best for me.”

7/17/2019 – “I have been on Ortho-Tri-Cyclen for over ten years. I have had zero issues, I mean ZERO. Since they have discontinued this product my Kaiser pharmacy put me on Tri-Sprintec. THAT WAS INSAAAAAANE. They say it’s the “same” or a generic but if you have been on Tri-Ortho it is not. Massive mood swings, dehydration, my heart was racing like no other, I was low key freaking out and etc. NOW I am being forced to try another generic Tri-Estarylla. I will update once I have been on it for a few weeks.”

3/18/2019 – “I’ve tried many birth controls and Ortho Tri-Cyclen is incredible. I don’t get acne, my appetite hasn’t changed, was a little moody when I first started but it went away and now I feel great! I feel like it’s helped my mood. I do have nausea every once in a while. Sometimes it’s bad and sometimes it’s mild. I also have vaginal dryness but these things don’t bother me compared to the other side effects I’ve had with other birth controls”

10/24/2018 – “This birth control was great as a contraceptive, no pregnancy scares ever. It also took away any pain and made me have less bleeding during the period, which was a withdrawal time of course. However, with this pill my acne got worse. It would concentrate on my cheeks and chin. Before taking this pill my skin was perfectly clear but after I would get more pimples which would leave scarring on my face. I gave it four months because I heard you should try a birth control for three months before quitting, but the acne has remained constant. The pill did make me gain some more boobs so I guess that was a plus. Due to the fact that I don’t need a contraceptive anymore, I stopped taking this pill and also in hopes of my skin going back to normal.”
