Any time you take a prescription medicine; it is possible to experience unwanted or negative events – or side effects. These can be mild or severe. Different people may have different reactions. Also, these reactions (or side effects) can change over time.  

  

If you are taking Mounjaro® for type 2 diabetes and implementing a healthy diet and exercise, you may enjoy improved blood sugar and lower A1C. You may also experience weight-loss as an added benefit. Along with these positive results, however, you may also face some potential risks.  

  

Understanding your potential risk factors is important. Here’s information related to possible common and more serious side effects of Mounjaro®.

Most common side effects of Mounjaro®

People taking Mounjaro® most commonly may experience the following symptoms1. This does not mean you will have these if you take Mounjaro®. But they may occur. 
Nausea Diarrhea
Decreased appetite
Vomiting
Constipation
Indigestion
Stomach pain

How long will Mounjaro® side effects last?

In some cases, dosing changes may impact Mounjaro® side effects. 

When you take this medication, your doctor will typically start with the lowest dose, and then move to a higher dose until you find the one that is right for you. You may be more likely to experience some side effects when you increase your Mounjaro® doses. Sometimes, these side effects may lessen after your body adjusts to the medication.  

From Eli Lilly and Company manufacturer of Mounjaro®:

  • In studies, most nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea events occurred while the dose of Mounjaro® was increased. These events decreased over time. 
  •  In studies, gastrointestinal (GI) side effects were more common in people taking Mounjaro® than people taking placebo, and people taking Mounjaro® were more likely to stop treatment because of these side effects.1

Possible serious side effects of Mounjaro®

While some Mounjaro® side effects are mild, others can be serious and may lead to a medical emergency. People with certain conditions may be at higher risk. 

Risk of tumors in the thyroid

Mounjaro® has a boxed warning2 about the possible risk of tumors in the thyroid, including thyroid cancer. This is the highest safety-related warning that medications can have assigned by the Food and Drug Administration. It is meant to alert you and your healthcare provider to any risks. Your healthcare provider can then use this information to make prescribing decisions tailored for you. 

  

You can play an important role by telling your provider if you notice: 

  • A lump or swelling in your neck 
  • Hoarseness 
  • Trouble swallowing 
  • Shortness of breath   

 

Also, do not use Mounjaro® if: 

  • You or any of your family have ever had a type of thyroid cancer called medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC). 
  •  You or a family member have Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2). 
  • You are allergic to Mounjaro® or any of the ingredients in Mounjaro®. 

Possible Mounjaro® effect on birth control and more

Mounjaro® may impact the effectiveness of birth control pills taken by mouth. Talk with your healthcare provider about this if you take this type of medication. A different form of birth control may be best to take while taking Mounjaro. Also talk with your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to breastfeed.

Other serious side effects

Below are some other possible serious side effects that may occur with Mounjaro®.1,2  

  •  Inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis) 
  •  Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) 
  •  Serious allergic reactions 
  • Kidney problems (kidney failure) 
  •  Severe stomach problems  
  •  Changes in vision 
  •  Gallbladder problems 

  

Depending on your symptoms, you may need to stop taking Mounjaro® and get help right away if certain serious side effects occur. Be sure to talk with your provider about any side effects that bother you or persist.
