What are MIEBO® eye drops?

MIEBO® (perfluorohexyloctane ophthalmic solution) is a prescription medication that comes in the form of eye drops.1 MIEBO® is an FDA-approved eye drop that is typically prescribed to adults to manage dry eye disease (DED).1, 2 The recommended dosage of MIEBO® is one drop in each eye four times daily.2

How do MIEBO® eye drops work?

MIEBO® eye drops create a protective layer on the eye’s surface, slowing the evaporation of natural tears. ¹ ² This helps keep the eyes moisturized and reduces discomfort caused by dryness.

MIEBO® specifically targets meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), a common cause of dry eye disease. ³ These glands, located in the eyelids, produce an oil that prevents tears from evaporating too quickly. When they do not function properly, eyes become dry and irritated. By stabilizing the tear film, MIEBO® helps alleviate symptoms associated with MGD. ⁴

Benefits of MIEBO® eye drops

MIEBO® is the first FDA-approved prescription designed to slow tear evaporation, providing relief from dry eye disease (DED). ³ It is preservative-free and intended for long-term use. ⁵

Immediate and long-term symptom relief

People using MIEBO® eye drops have reported relief from DED-related eye discomfort after two weeks of daily use, with symptoms continuing to decline after eight weeks.2, 6 MIEBO® creates a long-lasting, protective film on the eyes, which reduces the painful friction often associated with blinking and can even promote healing on the eye’s surface over time.1, 2, 3, 4

Ease of use and convenience for patients

MIEBO® comes in a compact, easy-to-use bottle and has minimal side effects. ¹ ² It currently has no known interactions with other medications. ¹

MIEBO® eye drops side effects

When taken at the recommended dosage levels, MIEBO® eye drops typically cause only mild side effects in a small number of people.1, 2 If you experience any discomfort from MIEBO®, be sure to contact your doctor to discuss the best treatment plan.

Common side effects

The most reported side effects when taking MIEBO® are blurred vision and eye redness.1 However, in clinical trials, these reactions were only observed in 1 to 3% of participants.2

Rare but serious side effects

While it is uncommon, you may experience a serious allergic reaction from MIEBO® eye drops.1 If you notice any potential symptoms of an allergic reaction, including breathing problems, nausea, vomiting, swelling of the lymph nodes or face, and dizziness, you should seek medical help immediately by dialing 911.1

MIEBO® eye drops dosage and instructions

The typical dosage is one drop of MIEBO® in each affected eye four times daily.2 People prescribed MIEBO® eye drops should instill the appropriate dosage in each eye by turning the bottle upside down above the eye and gently squeezing it until one drop is released.2

If you wear contact lenses, you should remove them before using MIEBO® eye drops and only reinsert them 30 minutes after your dose.2
