About Cologuard
Cologuard is a screening test for colorectal cancer (colon cancer and rectal cancer). Cologuard detects changes in your DNA that could indicate colon cancer or precancerous polyps, which may develop into cancer.
Cologuard is used to detect colorectal cancer. Cologuard is available only by prescription, and your doctor will need to prescribe the colorectal cancer screening test before you're able to order a Cologuard kit.
Cologuard kits include a bracket, collection bucket, probe, and lab tube set to collect your stool sample and send it back to the lab for testing. It’s always important to follow the specific instructions on your test kit.
A positive result indicates that further cancer testing is needed. A negative test result may help you avoid a colonoscopy based on your doctor's advice.
Cologuard uses
Cologuard, which is available through healthcare providers, offers people 50 and older at average risk for colorectal cancer an easy-to-use screening test. If you have a personal or family history of colorectal cancer, your healthcare provider may recommend regular screening tests.
After your healthcare provider prescribes your colon cancer screening kit, the kit will be sent directly to your home. Then, you can collect a stool sample and send it back to the lab for testing.
Cologuard side effects
Cologuard testing has potential drawbacks, mostly involving the accuracy of the screening test. According to a 2018 review, stool sample testing is not as accurate as a colonoscopy when detecting precancerous polyps or lesions.
False positives can create unnecessary stress and worry while waiting for follow-up test results. Because Cologuard testing produces high levels of false negatives, it's important to talk to your healthcare provider before taking the test.
A false-negative test result—or missing the presence of colorectal cancer—is also possible. In a 2014 study, the false-negative rate was higher for larger polyps. Since Cologuard tests are relatively new, there are not yet any long-term data on how this screening method will affect your outlook if you have colon cancer.
You should call your doctor if you have any concerns about the preventive screening, or if you develop any other new or concerning symptoms.
How to take Cologuard
Your test kit will come with everything you need to collect a stool sample. Using the bracket and collection bucket that comes with your Cologuard test, you can have a bowel movement that goes directly into the collection bucket. Then, you'll use the plastic probe to collect a sample and place it in the tube.
After collecting your stool sample, pour the preservation solution into the kit and screw on the lid. Make sure to fill out your personal information, including the date and time of your sample collection. Finally, ship the testing box back to the lab within 24 hours.
What to avoid while taking Cologuard
When taking your Cologuard test, don’t change what you are taking without checking with your doctor or pharmacist. That includes other medications or supplements, as well as over-the-counter drugs.
Avoid multitarget stool DNA testing if:
-
You have diarrhea.
-
You're currently menstruating.
-
You have rectal bleeding due to hemorrhoids.
