What is ProAir HFA?

ProAir HFA is an inhaler used for the treatment of reversible obstructive airway disease, or asthma, and for those diagnosed with exercise-induced bronchospasm.

It’s used to help treat shortness of breath and/or wheezing and is a fast-acting drug, also known as a rescue inhaler, to help prevent or treat the tightening of airway muscles during a bronchospasm, also known as an asthma attack.

How Does ProAir HFA Work?

Also known as Albuterol, this inhaler is considered a bronchodilator. ProAir HFA helps open the airways and relaxes airway muscles.

Many asthma patients are prescribed ProAir HFA to use before exercise as an asthma attack preventative.

When taken to prevent exercise-induced bronchospasm, this medication is thought to work best when used 15-30 minutes before exercise. If you are using ProAir HFA to help treat regular asthma symptoms, you will want to use it as indicated by your doctor.

The effects of this medication last about 4-6 hours.

ProAir HFA Side Effects

As with any medication, it’s important to speak with your doctor about potential side effects. Some of the side effects associated with ProAir HFA include:

  • Dizziness
  • Chest pain
  • Shakiness
  • Feeling nervous
  • Headache
  • Body aches
  • Cough
  • Sore throat
  • Runny nose
  • Stuffy nose

If you experience any unusual symptoms upon starting ProAir HFA, contact your doctor immediately.

ProAir Considerations

There are some precautions that will help determine whether or not ProAir HFA will work for you and your symptoms.

This is where a detailed medical history comes into play and why it’s key to share all of the current medications and supplements you take with your doctor.

Talk to your doctor if you have a history of any of the following conditions:

It’s also important to tell your doctor if you take any of the following medications, as these may affect ProAir HFA.

  • Antidepressants
  • Diuretics
  • Any additional bronchodilators
  • MAOI inhibitors
  • Beta blockers
  • Digoxin

This is not a complete list of drugs that may cause interactions with ProAir HFA, talk to your doctor about all medications and supplements you take.

Can You Get an Inhaler Without Going to the Doctor?

No, you cannot get ProAir HFA over the counter.

This is a prescription only inhaler that you must speak with a doctor about before getting a prescription.

This is important because all medications have contraindications, so discussing your medical history with a medical professional will help determine if ProAir HFA is right for you.

Avoid any website that states that you can get ProAir HFA online without a prescription, this is illegal.

You can get ProAir HFA and other inhalers without going to the doctor by meeting with an online doctor.

How Much is ProAir Inhaler Without Insurance?

The cost of medical care and prescription medications is stressful for those who don’t have insurance or those who have high deductible insurance plans.

If you are prescribed a ProAir HFA inhaler, the cost without insurance depends on where you live and the pharmacy. However, the average cash price is expected to be roughly $79.

If you are uninsured and paying cash, be sure to check with your pharmacy about prescription savings plans, and ask your doctor about the generic form of ProAir inhaler, which may come at a lower price.

Is There a Generic Form of ProAir Inhaler?

The generic form of ProAir is called albuterol and comes at roughly 50% of the cost of the brand name ProAir HFA inhaler, so be sure to speak with your doctor about a generic version if you are paying cash price.
