Crestor Vs Lipitor

If you have high cholesterol, it can be difficult to decide which cholesterol-lowering medication would be the best for you. We want to give you all the facts to help you decide which one you should take. Since Crestor and Lipitor are two of the most common statins, let’s discuss the differences between them.

Which Statin is Better: Lipitor or Crestor?

Lipitor and Crestor are both effective statins that lower levels of “bad” cholesterol and increase levels of “good” cholesterol. While Crestor is the more potent statin, both medications are effective and have slightly different side effects and drug interactions. While neither medication is better than the other in general, one may be better for you and your condition than the other.

Are Lipitor and Crestor the Same Thing?

While Lipitor and Crestor are both HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors, also known as statins, they are different medications with different ingredients, side effects, and interactions.

Which Statin Has the Least Amount of Side Effects?

Crestor and Lipitor have many of the same side effects. However, some side effects do differ slightly between the two medications.

Crestor Vs Lipitor Drug Interactions and Other Precautions

One of the most important distinctions between Crestor and Lipitor are the drug interactions and other precautions. To avoid serious complications, you should always tell your doctor about any medications you take and your complete medical history.

Crestor Drug Interactions

Always tell your doctor about all medications you take, including vitamins, supplements, and over the counter medications. With Crestor, be especially sure to mention any of the following:

Crestor Precautions

Crestor may cause complications with certain medical conditions. Tell your doctor your complete medical history, especially:

  • Liver disease
  • Diabetes
  • Kidney disease
  • Thyroid problem
  • Older than 65
  • Of Asian descent
  • You have more than 2 alcoholic drinks per day
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding

Lipitor Precautions

Make sure you tell your doctor if you have any of the following:

  • Liver disease
  • Diabetes
  • Kidney disease
  • Thyroid problem
  • Muscle pain or weakness
  • You have more than 2 alcoholic drinks per day
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding

Crestor vs Lipitor Muscle Pain

Statin medications like Crestor and Lipitor cause muscle pain in about 5 percent of patients. The muscle pain may be mild and temporary or, rarely, it can be a symptom of a life-threatening condition called rhabdomyolysis.

People who drink a lot of grapefruit juice or have liver or thyroid problems are more likely to have muscle pain as a side effect of statins than other people.

If you experience muscle pain while taking Crestor or Lipitor, contact your doctor immediately. They may want to perform a physical exam and run some blood tests to determine whether you can safely continue to use statins.
