Famvir is the brand name for famciclovir, an antiviral drug.

Famvir Dosage and Treatment

The dosage for Famvir varies depending on what it is being used for and who is taking it.

Cold Sore Treatment: one 1500 mg dose.

Shingles Treatment: 500 mg every 8 hours for 7 days

Suppressive Therapy: 250 mg twice daily for up to one year

Recurrent Genital Herpes Treatment: 1000 mg twice daily for one day.

What Is Famvir Used for?

Famvir is used to treat the symptoms of shingles, cold sores, and genital herpes. While it can not cure the herpes virus, it can relieve symptoms caused by it.

Potential side effects of Famvir may include:

  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea

  • Yellowing eyes or skin

  • Confusion or drowsiness
  • Mental or mood changes
