What is telemedicine?

Telemedicine allows you to receive medical treatment and obtain prescriptions without needing to visit a healthcare facility. It continues to be widely used, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic.1

At PlushCare, we are committed to advancing telemedicine and making care more accessible and affordable for you. Here is a closer look at what telemedicine entails and how it may help support your health needs.

How does telemedicine work?

  • Connect to care from home or anywhere

With telemedicine (also called telehealth or virtual healthcare), it lets you interact with your provider from virtually any location using your smartphone or computer. No crowded waiting rooms. No travel. And you can often get same-day appointments. At PlushCare, we have a team of doctors from the top 50 medical schools in America available to support your healthcare needs via telemedicine.

  • Book online with your smartphone or computer

Many providers now offer telemedicine services that allow you to book appointments online.2 If you’re unsure whether a telemedicine appointment is appropriate for your health concern, you can reach out to your provider to find out. With PlushCare, booking appointments is easy. We connect you with available doctors to choose from and you can schedule appointments yourself.

  • Online prescriptions and refills made easier

You can also use telemedicine for your prescription needs. With our medication services, you can book a virtual care (telemedicine) visit, and have your prescription sent to your preferred pharmacy, if deemed appropriate by your treating physician. Our advanced technology is integrated with most major health insurance, labs, and pharmacies.

Telemedicine FAQs

Can I use my phone for telemedicine?

You can use your smartphone for a telemedicine visit. But a regular phone (non-smartphone) will not work for most telemedicine visits because it does not have internet access to connect with a provider. If you do not have access to the technology needed for a telemedicine visit, or if you are having trouble using your technology, call our customer service line to talk with our care team about your options.

Do I need a special app for telemedicine?

Aside from the PlushCare app which allows you to create an account and set up video visits, you do not need to install other apps to use telemedicine. For most visits – including appointments through PlushCare – you can use the technology you already have.

With that said, there are apps that can help with things like communicating with your doctor or monitoring health conditions. These are often referred to as “telehealth” apps.

Is telehealth the same as telemedicine?

The terms telemedicine and telehealth are sometimes used interchangeably. But they are not exactly the same. Both involve the use of technology to provide health services. However, telehealth is a broader term.

Telehealth can include things like online therapy, patient education, social support, and medication adherence.3 Telemedicine, on the other hand, usually involves the direct delivery of medical services by doctors, such as an online medical appointment. Therefore, you can think of telemedicine as being a part of telehealth.

What are examples of telemedicine, and the care offered?

With our telemedicine services, you can get help with online prescriptions, chronic conditions, and non-emergency medical issues. For example, some of the conditions doctors treat through PlushCare can include allergies, gout, migraines, sinus infections, UTI’s, flu, colds, strep/sore throat, and many others. PlushCare doctors can also help with weight management, online prescriptions, and mental health issues, such as anxiety and depression.

Please note – telemedicine is not for emergencies. If you are experiencing severe symptoms like chest pain, difficulty breathing, or bleeding that will not stop, seek immediate in-person emergency care, or call 911.

Does the doctor call me for a telemedicine appointment?

You typically do not get a phone call for a telemedicine appointment. Instead, everything is done online through the PlushCare app. After you schedule your appointment, you can expect to receive an email or text with a link that you can use on the day of your appointment. You click on that link to start your telemedicine visit

What happens during a telemedicine visit?

Once you start your telemedicine visit, you will be able to talk with your provider as if you were in the room with them. If you are having trouble seeing or hearing your provider, be sure that your device’s microphone, camera, and sound are turned on. You will see symbols (icons) that represent these features. If they are marked with a slash or an x,” click on the icons to turn them on.

How should I prepare for a telemedicine visit?

You will want to make sure that your technology is charged, and everything is working, including your camera, speakers, and internet connection. It can be a good idea to log on a little early to test everything and get situated. Also, try to be in a quiet, brightly lit space where your provider can see you clearly. Avoid crowded and public spaces, and do not drive while attempting to connect or complete your visit. As with an in-person appointment, plan to have questions ready to discuss with your doctor. Is telemedicine covered by insurance?

Most insurance providers cover at least some form of telemedicine service but check with your plan to understand your coverage. At PlushCare, we accept most major insurances, and we are fully licensed in all 50 states. While we do accept insurance, it is not required for your appointment. We even have options to pay for labs (blood tests) without insurance, which may be much more affordable than you may find through other resources. Download the PlushCare app, book an appointment, and begin your telemedicine journey today.
