What Is Dulera inhaler?

Dulera inhalers are maintenance inhalers to help manage asthma symptoms by combining mometasone, a corticosteroid that reduces inflammation, and formoterol, a bronchodilator that improves breathing. However, Dulera is not a rescue inhaler for sudden asthma attacks.2

What Is Dulera inhaler used for?

Together, mometasone and formoterol help improve peoples’ lung function. Mometasone is a corticosteroid, which means it helps to combat inflammation in the lungs that often leads to asthma attacks. Formoterol, the other medication in Dulera inhalers, is an adrenergic bronchodilator. These types of medications help to open the air passages in the lungs — relieving coughing, troubled breathing, and shortness of breath.1

Conditions treated by Dulera

Asthma

Asthma is a common condition that causes breathing difficulties due to lung inflammation. Dulera helps by reducing inflammation and opening airways to improve breathing.

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)

COPD is an umbrella term that encompasses a few respiratory conditions including bronchitis and emphysema.4 COPD causes symptoms similar to asthma including shortness of breath, wheezing, chest tightness and more. While the FDA has not yet approved Dulera to treat COPD, research suggests that Dulera inhalers can help treat moderate to severe cases of it. 3

Dulera inhaler dosage and instructions

Dulera should be taken twice daily, in the morning and evening. Avoid exceeding the recommended dosage to prevent side effects from formoterol.5 Currently, the inhaler comes in three different strengths. A dose of 50 mcg mometasone/5 mcg formoterol is recommended for patients aged five to 12. Doses of 100mcg/5mcg and 200 mcg/5 mcg have been approved for patients aged 12 and older. 6

Instructions

  1. To use a Dulera inhaler, remove the cap from the mouthpiece. The first time you use it; you need to prime it by releasing at least four test sprays into the air away from your body to make sure it is dispersing medication. 6
  2. Shake the inhaler, breathe out as much air as you can from your lungs and place the mouthpiece into your mouth. Then, take a huge, slow breath in while pressing down on the top of the canister.
  3. Hold your breath up to 10 seconds and then breathe out through your nose while keeping your mouth closed.
  4. After, wait at least thirty seconds before taking another puff. Repeat the same process with the second dose.
  5. After taking your doses, rinse your mouth with water.

Dulera vs. Symbicort

Dulera and Symbicort both combine a corticosteroid with formoterol, but Symbicort contains budesonide instead of mometasone. Symbicort has been approved to treat COPD by the FDA, while Dulera has only been approved to prevent asthma symptoms. Other combination inhalers include Advair Diskus, which also combines a corticosteroid with a bronchodilator for asthma treatment.
