“I joined PlushCare to explore the role of technology in serving unmet healthcare needs.””

A graduate of Stanford’s Internal Medicine Residency Program and the University of Pennsylvania (receiving both her MD and Master’s degree), Dr. Anegawa has over 20 years of experience in academic primary care as well as urgent care.

She is also board-certified in Obesity Medicine, giving her special expertise in assisting patients with health improvements through weight loss. “In Internal Medicine we see a lot of patients with chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, and cholesterol concerns. With my Obesity Medicine specialty, I gained the tools to help patients reduce the impact of these diseases, rather than just trying to manage the chronic disease long term. It can be so gratifying to help patients get off medications and reach their long-term health and weight goals.”

Dr. Anegawa also sits on multiple scientific advisory boards in the weight loss and wellness industries. In addition, she is the author of ‘Not Another Keto Book: The Obesity Medicine Solution,’ a book written to guide patients on an individualized approach to weight management.

What’s your role at PlushCare?

“I wear several hats at PlushCare. First and foremost, I’m a primary care physician, taking care of patients across the country. As a Medical Director, I support our physicians’ practice needs and help to grow and evolve the services we offer. I also direct the Weight Management program at PlushCare.”

Why did you decide to join the PlushCare team?

“I joinedPlushCare in 2014 when the company was still in its infancy. I didn’t know what telemedicine was all about at that time, but I wanted to learn because I felt it represented the future of medicine. I never imagined that I’d transition to all-virtual practice; yet I grew to love the fact that I can see such a diverse group of patients (often thousands of miles from me) without stepping out of my office!

I continue to practice with PlushCare because of our company’s commitment to highly personalized care that keeps the doctor-patient relationship central. I also value that we are affordable to patients, and that we give back to communities.”

How Does the Weight Management Program at PlushCare work?

“Our Weight Management program takes a comprehensive and holistic approach to each individual patient’s concerns.

We start with a physician appointment for evaluation. Blood testing is done to evaluate each person’s metabolic status, and from there a program is created for that patient including any or all of the following:

  • optimization of medical problems and current medications
  • addition of possible weight loss medications
  • an eating/lifestyle plan with health coaching
  • behavioral support

There is no one ‘right way’ to lose weight, so different approaches are used with each individual in close collaboration.”

What’s your proudest professional moment?

“My proudest moment was helping one of my patients with diabetes come off all their insulin through effective weight management and comprehensive lifestyle changes. I truly value empowering people to take charge of their health!”

What do you do when you are not practicing medicine?

“I love dancing, cat rescue, spending time with family, and finding new and delicious healthy things to eat.”

Name the best piece of health advice you’ve ever received.

“If we could give every individual the right amount of nourishment and exercise, not too little and not too much, we would have found the safest way to health.” ~ Hippocrates
