What is Dutasteride?

Dutasteride is used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in men with enlarged prostate. Dutasteride’s brand name is Avodart

Dutasteride has also been shown to help with male pattern baldness but is not FDA approved for this treatment. Therefor hair loss treatment with dutasteride is considered off-label.

How Does Dutasteride Work?

Dutasteride works by reducing the size of the enlarged prostate.

There is a hormone in your blood called dihydrotestosterone (DHT) that causes your prostate to grow. Dutasteride prevents the formation of DHT and helps relieve symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) such as developing acute urinary retention.

Dutasteride may also decrease the chance that prostate surgery will be needed.

Dutasteride Dosage and Treatment

Before you start taking your medication, be sure to ask your doctor to explain any part you do not understand. Take Dutasteride as directed by your doctor.

Typical dosage for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is one 0.5-mg capsule per day.

The strength of your dosage will be determined by your doctor depending on your age, how severe your condition is, and other medications and conditions you may have.

Dutasteride comes in a capsule and is taken by mouth. Swallow the capsules whole and do not chew them or crush them. It is usually taken once a day with or without food as directed by your doctor.

Take it around the same time everyday.

How Quickly Does Dutasteride Work?

Your symptoms may improve after you have taken dutasteride for 3 months but most patients see the full benefit after 6 months of taking dutasteride.

Dutasteride Benefits

Benefits of Dutasteride include experiencing less pain while urinating and less pain in your prostate. Some studies have found the benefit of hair growth while taking dutasteride.

Dutasteride vs Finasteride

Dutasteride and finasteride are both designed to stop the conversion of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone that causes an enlarged prostate and causes male pattern baldness. The main difference between both Dutasteride and Finasteride is the intensity of the effect.

Is Dutasteride Better Than Finasteride for Hair Loss?

Finasteride 1mg blocks about 70% of DHT, whereas dutasteride 0.5mg blocks more than 90%.

This means that dutasteride is more effective at stopping the conversion of testosterone into DHT. Finasteride is generally the first line treatment for hair loss, but a recent study has shown dutasteride as a stronger hair loss treatment.

Can You Lose Hair on Dutasteride?

Dutasteride blocks dihydrotestosterone from causing male pattern baldness. Speak to your doctor if you are taking dutasteride and are experiencing hair loss.

Is it Safe to Take Dutasteride?

Yes, It is safe to take dutasteride as prescribed by your doctor. Tell your doctor about other health concerns or side effects you may have while taking Dutasteride.

Is it Safe to Take Dutasteride Long Term?
