What is a Doctor’s Note?

A doctor’s note is a legal excuse verifying the patient, the time, and the date of a doctor’s appointment. A doctor’s note is a legal document produced either directly by the doctor or their office administration that affirms you had an appointment.

A doctor’s note is often used to verify an absence from school or work.

Is a Sick Note the Same as a Doctor’s Note?

Yes! A sick note can also be called a doctor’s note or a doctor’s excuse. Just like a doctor’s note, a sick note is:

  • A legal document
  • Verification that you attended an appointment at a specific time and date
  • A credible justification in order to excuse you from prior engagements

You may be wondering, how do I get a sick note?

A sick note is something you get from a healthcare provider. It is not something you can make yourself. In fact, it is illegal and dishonest to forge a sick note.

Luckily, getting a doctor’s note or a sick note is very convenient with the help of PlushCare, even last minute. Our doctors are available for same-day appointments and can write you a legitimate doctor’s note following your online consultation. The average appointment is $25 and lasts less than 15 minutes. 98% of conditions are successfully treated on the first visit.

What Will Doctors Write Notes For?

Doctor’s notes are usually given for the purpose of school or work excuses. Doctors write notes for a wide variety of conditions. Generally speaking, it doesn’t matter what you’re seeing the doctor for, it’s just that you saw a doctor at a specific time and have the note to prove it.

That said, depending on your condition, the doctor may also specify treatment requirements and limitations that may be relevant to your daily activities, including work or school. For example, the doctor may write in your note that you will be unable to attend gym class due to a sprained ankle.

Additionally, doctors can write doctor’s notes for scheduled appointments, follow up appointments, procedures, and surgeries. For extended periods of time off a doctor can verify FMLA paperwork, which is a formidable excuse for several weeks and sometimes months, depending on the illness or patient condition.

What is the Role of a Doctor’s Note for School?

Each school system has predetermined excused and unexcused absences. Doctor’s notes are considered excused absences which omit the student from disciplinary action if they did not attend class.

A doctor’s note for a school absence is handed to the front-desk staff at the school or the student’s primary teacher. This note is placed in the student’s record for proof of excused absences or tardies.

Many times, students are allowed a predetermined amount of excused absences before disciplinary action takes place. Conversely, schools allow far fewer unexcused absences before disciplinary action takes place. This is why having a doctor’s note is so important.

How to Get a Doctor’s Note for School

Can you get a doctor’s note for school absences? Getting a doctor’s note for school is simple. Just ask your doctor for a doctor’s note at the end of your appointment.

Doctors are used to providing patients with notes and many doctors already have these created for patients and simply add the patient’s name, appointment date, and time.
