Wegovy® side effects

Like all drugs, Wegovy® pill has some side effects. The Novo Nordisk trial showed people who took the pill experienced similar side effects as those on injectables, including the following side effects:

Nausea
Diarrhea

Constipation
Stomach (abdomen) pain
Headache
Tiredness (fatigue)

If you experience any severe side effects such as serious allergic reactions, a severe rash, rapid heartbeat, or severe pain, seek emergency medical help immediately.

Severe Side effects include:

Inflammation of your pancreas (pancreatitis). Stop using Wegovy® and call your healthcare provider right away if you have severe pain in your stomach area (abdomen) that will not go away, with or without nausea or vomiting. Sometimes you may feel the pain from your abdomen to your back

Gallbladder problems. Wegovy® may cause gallbladder problems, including gallstones. Some gallstones may need surgery. Call your healthcare provider if you have symptoms, such as pain in your upper stomach (abdomen), fever, yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice), or clay-colored stools

Increased risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), especially those who also take medicines for diabetes such as insulin or sulfonylureas. This can be a serious side effect. Talk to your healthcare provider about how to recognize and treat low blood sugar and check your blood sugar before you start and while you take Wegovy®. Signs and symptoms of low blood sugar may include dizziness or light-headedness, blurred vision, anxiety, irritability or mood changes, sweating, slurred speech, hunger, confusion or drowsiness, shakiness, weakness, headache, fast heartbeat, or feeling jittery

Dehydration leading to kidney problems. Diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting may cause a loss of fluids (dehydration), which may cause kidney problems. It is important for you to drink fluids to help reduce your chance of dehydration. Tell your healthcare provider right away if you have nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea that does not go away

Severe stomach problems. Stomach problems, sometimes severe, have been reported in people who use Wegovy®

Serious allergic reactions. Stop using Wegovy® and get medical help right away, if you have any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, including swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat; problems breathing or swallowing; severe rash or itching; fainting or feeling dizzy; or very rapid heartbeat

Change in vision in people with type 2 diabetes. Tell your healthcare provider if you have changes in vision during treatment with Wegovy®

Increased heart rate. Wegovy® can increase your heart rate while you are at rest. Tell your healthcare provider if you feel your heart racing or pounding in your chest and it lasts for several minutes

Depression or thoughts of suicide. You should pay attention to any mental changes, especially sudden changes in your mood, behaviors, thoughts, or feelings. Call your healthcare provider right away if you have any mental changes that are new, worse, or worry you

Food or liquid getting into the lungs during surgery or other procedures that use anesthesia or deep sleepiness (deep sedation). Wegovy® may increase the chance of food getting into your lungs during surgery or other procedures. Tell all your healthcare providers that you are taking Wegovy® before you are scheduled to have surgery or other procedures

How much does Wegovy® pill cost with insurance?
While it is stated that with insurance the co-pay for the oral Wegovy® pill could be about $25 or less, insurance coverage for Wegovy® is variable.

Some private insurance plans, as well as some Medicaid programs, cover obesity drugs; however, Medicare does not. Some public insurance providers view weight loss treatments as lifestyle medications, which they are less likely to cover.
Is Wegovy® pill for weight loss effective?
Yes, Wegovy® pill is effective for weight loss; people taking it experienced a mean weight loss of 13.6% of their body weight.

The weight loss achieved with the Wegovy^® pill was similar to that of injectable Wegovy^® 2.4 mg. Furthermore, participants in the oral semaglutide group were significantly more likely than those in the placebo group to have body-weight reductions of 5% or more, 10% or more, 15% or more, and 20% or more (P<0.001 for all comparisons) and to have an improved IWQOL-Lite-CT Physical Function score (P<0.001). The well-known safety and tolerability profile of semaglutide was reaffirmed with the Wegovy^® pill in the trial, which was comparable to previous trials with semaglutide for weight management.

Over the 71 weeks, an average of 13.6% of body weight was lost in these patients treated with once-daily oral Wegovy® (semaglutide) 25 mg pill compared to −2.2% in the placebo group with obesity or overweight with one or more comorbidities.

What is the difference between Wegovy® pill & Wegovy® injection?
A 71-week clinical trial with over 300 participants found that those with obesity or overweight who completed the trial and took the oral Wegovy® pill once a day lost an average of 13.6% of their body weight, a similar amount of weight loss to those who took the 2.4 mg injectable form of Wegovy® once a week, as reported in an earlier study published in The New England Journal of Medicine in 2021.

The trial showed people who took the pill experienced similar side effects as those on injectables, including gastrointestinal issues such as nausea, diarrhea and vomiting.

Some people who already use Wegovy® 2.4 mg injections may be able to switch to taking the 25 mg daily Wegovy® pill after stopping use and then starting on the pill a week later. Also, people taking the 25 mg Wegovy® tablet can switch to Wegovy® injectables by starting a weekly dose the day after stopping the pill. Anyone considering switching between dosages and different forms of Wegovy should consult their doctor before making any changes.

Both the oral and injectable Wegovy® contain semaglutide, but the oral Wegovy® pill will be available in starting doses of 1.5 mg, whereas the injectables are available in 2.4 mg doses.

Injectable forms of Wegovy® must be stored in a refrigerator between 36 and 46 degrees Fahrenheit. Pill forms of Wegovy® don't require refrigeration.
