What is Breztri Aerosphere inhaler?

Breztri Aerosphere is a prescription medication in the form of an inhaler that is  intended for use in adults with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).1 It is a “triple therapy” inhaler, which means that it contains three different medications, each with their own mechanism of action.1, 2, 3 All three of these medicines work together to reduce COPD symptoms.1

How does Breztri inhaler work?

As a triple therapy inhaler, Breztri combines three different medications with their own mechanisms of action to manage COPD symptoms.1, 2, 3 These are:

  1. Budesonide, an inhaled corticosteroid (ICS), which decreases inflammation in the lungs
  2. Glycopyrrolate, an anticholinergic, which relaxes and widens airway muscles by blocking a neurotransmitter called acetylcholine, which is responsible for muscle contraction
  3. Formoterol fumarate, a long-acting beta2-adrenergic agonist (LABA), which also relaxes the airways by activating smooth muscle cells

Breztri Aerosphere begins working within about 5 minutes of taking it.1

What is Breztri Aerosphere prescribed for?

Breztri Aerosphere is prescribed for long-term use as a controller-inhaler in adults with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).1, 2, 3 COPD is a chronic lung condition comprising emphysema and/or chronic bronchitis.3 Emphysema is characterized by damaged air sacs in the lungs, making you unable to fully exhale and causing shortness of breath.4 People with chronic bronchitis, meanwhile, experience flare-ups of inflammation in their breathing tubes; these inflamed bronchi produce excess mucus and are prone to frequent infection.5

Breztri is not intended for use by people with asthma, nor should it be used as a rescue inhaler to treat sudden onset breathing problems.1, 2, 3

How to use Breztri inhaler

If you are prescribed Breztri Aerosphere, you will typically be instructed to inhale four puffs each day: two in the morning, and two in the evening.3 Before each use, be sure to shake your inhaler. After use, be sure to rinse your mouth out with water (and spit out the water you use to rinse) to prevent the development of oral thrush. You should also practice good oral hygiene while using Breztri.

Advice on cleaning and maintaining the device

You should clean your Breztri inhaler on a weekly basis by removing the mouthpiece cover, running warm water through the mouthpiece and actuator, and shaking the inhaler dry.6 See the manufacturer website for full instructions on cleaning the Breztri Aerosphere.

Common errors and how to avoid them

When using your Breztri inhaler, you should not open the cover until you are ready to take a dose.3 If the cover is removed when the inhaler is not in use, you risk losing some of the medication. If you drop your inhaler before using it, be sure to shake it again prior to taking your dose.7

Breztri Aerosphere dosage

The recommended dosage of Breztri is 320 mcg of budesonide, 18 mcg of glycopyrrolate, and 9.6 mcg of formoterol fumarate twice a day.7 This dosage is administered via four puffs a day—two in the morning, and two in the evening.

FAQs about Breztri inhaler

Is Breztri Aerosphere a steroid?

Breztri Aerosphere is a triple therapy medication that combines three medicines into one inhaler: budesonide, glycopyrrolate, and formoterol fumarate.1, 2, 3 Budesonide is an inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) that reduces inflammation in the lungs.

How much does Breztri Aerosphere cost without insurance?

The out-of-pocket price for Breztri Aerosphere is approximately $392 for 5.9 grams.8 The Breztri manufacturer also offers a Zero Pay program to reduce the cost associated with the inhaler, and at PlushCare, we offer a Prescription Discount Card in partnership with SingleCare, which can save you up to 80% on costs associated with medications.8

Can Breztri inhaler be used for asthma?

No, Breztri Aerosphere should not be used for asthma.1, 2, 3 Breztri is specifically formulated to treat adults with COPD, and there are other medications that can better manage symptoms of asthma.9

What should I do if I miss a dose?

If you forget to take a dose of Breztri Aerosphere, you should take it as soon as you remember—with an important exception being if you are close to your next dose.2 In this case, simply skip the missed dose and take the next one (in other words, do not take more than two puffs at a time).

How does Breztri compare to other COPD inhalers?

Breztri, Symbicort, Spiriva, and Advair are all inhalers that treat COPD.2 Unlike Breztri, which is only approved for use in COPD, however, Symbicort, Spiriva, and Advair can also be used to treat asthma.10, 11, 12

In clinical trials, Breztri reduced symptoms of COPD at more significant rates than dual therapy COPD prescriptions that include only two medications in the inhaler instead of three.13

Is Breztri Aerosphere safe for long-term use?

The Breztri inhaler is intended for long-term use in adults with COPD.1, 2 While most side effects are relatively mild, some potentially serious long-term impacts of using Breztri Aerosphere may include a higher risk of infection, osteoporosis, eye problems, increased blood sugar, and an underactive adrenal gland.14 Be sure to discuss any pre-existing conditions you have with your doctor before starting Breztri.

What should I do if I experience an allergic reaction to Breztri?

If you notice signs of an allergic reaction after taking Breztri—skin rash, swelling, itching, and more—you should contact your doctor right away to discuss next steps.14 In case of an emergency, such as difficulty breathing, call 911.

Are there any lifestyle changes that can improve the effectiveness of Breztri?

The best way to improve the effectiveness of Breztri is to keep your inhaler clean, take your doses at regular times each day, and practice good oral hygiene to prevent infection.3, 6 You should also stay current on vaccinations, including the yearly flu shot, and you should always discuss side effects and any concerns you have with your doctor.3
