Medications are prescribed at the sole discretion of a PlushCare physician. Prescriptions for non-controlled substances can only be written after a medical evaluation. Scheduling an appointment does not guarantee that a medication can or will be prescribed.

Please Note: PlushCare cannot write prescriptions for ADHD medication such as Adderall, Ritalin, and other controlled substances. Treatment of ADHD will depend on the individual’s symptoms, age, and the severity of impact. Prescription medication is a common form of treatment for ADHD. Treatment is most effective when medication therapy is combined with behavioral strategies.

What Is Strattera Used to Treat?

Strattera, also known by its generic name of atomoxetine, is used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children and adults.

How Does Strattera Work?

Strattera increases the amount of norepinephrine, a neurotransmitter (chemical in the brain that transmits nerve impulses). It may help increase the ability to concentrate, decrease hyperactivity and impulsiveness, and stop fidgeting.

How Effective Is Strattera for ADHD?

For some people, Strattera is less effective than stimulant medications (like Adderall or Ritalin) for treating ADHD. However, Strattera does not have the same risk of abuse or addiction, is not a controlled substance, and does not cause many of the potential side effects linked to psychostimulants, such as sleeplessness.

Strattera Side Effects

Like any medication, Strattera has the potential to cause side effects in some people. Side effects of Strattera may include:

  • Vomiting
  • Nausea
  • Constipation
  • Upset stomach
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Excessive tiredness
  • Dizziness
  • Mood swings
  • Gas
  • Abdominal pain
  • Dry mouth
  • Painful menstruation
  • Erection lasting for several hours or longer
  • Hot flashes
  • Difficulty urinating
  • Liver damage
  • Heart problems
  • Abnormal thoughts or hallucinating
  • Hostile or aggressive behavior

Strattera may increase the risk of suicidal thoughts or actions in teens and young adults, so they should be closely monitored for signs of depression or wanting to hurt themselves.

Strattera Precautions

While Strattera is generally considered to be safe, it is not right for everybody. Always tell your doctor about your complete health history and any medications you take, including over-the-counter medications, supplements, and vitamins.

Especially be sure to mention any health issues like:

  • Allergy to this medication
  • Pheochromocytoma (an adrenal problem)
  • Heart problems
  • Family history of heart problems
  • Glaucoma
  • Liver disease
  • High blood pressure
  • Stroke
  • Personal or family history of mood or mental disorders (like bipolar disorder, psychosis, depression, or suicidal thoughts)
  • Pregnant, nursing, or planning on becoming pregnant

Strattera can interact with some medications, including:

Strattera Dosage for ADHD

Strattera dosage is different for children than it is for adults.

For children and adults who weigh 70 kg (154 pounds) or less, the typical dosage is:

  • Starting dose: 0.5 mg/kg/day for at least 3 days
  • Maintenance dose: 1.2 mg/kg/day
  • Maximum dose: 1.4 mg/kg/day or 100 mg/day, whichever is less

For children and adults who weigh more than 154 pounds, the typical dosage is:

  • Starting dos: 40 mg/day for at least 3 days
  • Maintenance dose: 80 mg per day
  • Maximum dose: 100 mg per day

Always follow your doctor or pharmacist’s dosage instructions, since they may vary from these.

Frequently Asked Questions

What ADHD Symptoms Does Strattera Help With?

Strattera may help increase the ability to pay attention, stay focused, concentrate, and stop fidgeting.

How Long Does Strattera for ADHD Take to Start Working?

Once you or your child is on the maintenance dosage, it may take 4 to 8 weeks to get the maximum benefit. Strattera is not fast-acting like stimulant medications. It must build up in the bloodstream before it starts to work.
