Can You Get a Proscar Prescription Online?

Yes, you can get a Proscar prescription online. You can have an online doctor’s appointment, and if the doctor thinks Proscar is right for you, they can send an electronic prescription to your pharmacy.

Federal law requires everybody to talk to a doctor before getting any prescription medication, including Proscar. That means you can’t just order it online and have it shipped to your door without a prescription, you’ll need an online appointment first.

  • Book on our free mobile app or website.

Our doctors operate in all 50 states and same day appointments are available every 15 minutes.

  • See a doctor, get treatment and a prescription at your local pharmacy.

  • Use your health insurance just like you normally would to see your doctor.

What Is Proscar?

Proscar is the brand name for finasteride, which is primarily used to treat symptoms of an enlarged prostate (known as benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH). However, finasteride can also help with hair growth, so it is sometimes used to treat hair loss.

How Does Proscar Work?

Proscar works by decreasing the amount of a hormone (DHT) that causes prostate growth. This helps reduce enlarged prostate and relieve the associated symptoms.

Proscar Dosage and Treatment

Always follow your doctor’s dosing instructions. However, the usual Proscar dosage for treatment of BPH is one 5 mg tablet once a day.

Finasteride is also available in 1 mg tablets for the treatment of male pattern baldness.

What Are the Side Effects of Proscar?

Like any medication, Proscar does carry a risk of side effects. Potential side effects include:

  • Loss of interest in sex
  • Impotence
  • Weakness
  • Dizziness
  • Feeling faint
  • Swelling in feet or hands
  • Tenderness or swelling in breasts
  • Runny nose
  • Headache
  • Rash
  • Trouble having an orgasm
  • Abnormal ejaculation
  • Nipple discharge
  • Testicular pain
  • Inability to urinate

Proscar may also increase your risk of kidney problems and prostate cancer. Talk to your doctor about the side effects of Proscar before beginning treatment.

Considerations and Precautions of Proscar

Proscar is generally considered safe. However, it isn’t right for everybody. Always tell your doctor about your medical history. Before taking Proscar, especially be sure to mention the following:

  • Prostate cancer
  • Liver disease
  • Urinary problems
  • Infections
  • Stricture of your urethra
  • A bladder muscle disorder
  • An allergic reaction to a similar medication called dutasteride (Avodart)

Be sure to tell your doctor about any medications you take, as they may cause negative interactions with finasteride.

Women should not take Proscar, especially those who are nursing, pregnant, or may become pregnant.

What Is Proscar Used to Treat?

Proscar (finasteride) is primarily used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH, also known as an enlarged prostate. Finasteride is sometimes used in lower doses to treat male pattern hair loss.

Does Proscar Shrink the Prostate?

Yes, Proscar shrinks the prostate by decreasing the amount of DHT, which causes prostate growth. This can relieve some of the symptoms of an enlarged prostate such as difficulty urinating.

What Class of Drug Is Proscar?

Finasteride, the active ingredient in Proscar, is in a class of medications called 5-alpha reductase inhibitors, which block the hormone that causes prostate growth.

Is Finasteride Bad for the Kidneys?

There is some evidence that finasteride may cause kidney damage. You should discuss the benefits and risks of finasteride with your doctor before taking it.

Who Should Not Take Proscar?

Women and children should not take Proscar, especially women who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or may become pregnant. Proscar is not right for all men, discuss your health history and potential side effects with your doctor before beginning treatment.

Does Proscar Affect Blood Pressure?

There is not a lot of evidence that Proscar causes low or high blood pressure.

What Is the Safest Medication for Enlarged Prostate?

There is no one medication that is the safest for enlarged prostate. Every medication has risks and benefits. The best medication for you, whether it’s tamsulosin, finasteride, dutasteride, or something else, will vary depending on your health condition and any medications you take. Make sure to discuss the pros and cons of any medication with your doctor.
